Terry Battle returned the second-half kickoff 100 yards for the go-ahead touchdown and set up another score with a 50-yard run Saturday as No. 4 Arizona State beat surprisingly tough Oregon State, 29-14. The Beavers, winners of just two of their last 18 games and 23-point underdogs, led 14-9 at halftime behind the running of option quarterback Tim Alexander.

UCLA's Bruins had two shots at the Rose Bowl Saturday--afternoon and evening--and blew the first one, losing to USC. But they hit the next time when Arizona upset Arizona State in the nightcap, 16-13, on two big fumbles and two fourth-quarter field goals by Max Zendejas, including one that flew 57 yards. His game-winning 32-yard kick--with 1:43 left--followed an Arizona State fumble by quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst, who lost possession at the Sun Devil 20 when sacked.

The Trojans spent Friday viewing scenes of brutality and humiliation, of helpless victims being abused. No, they weren't watching videotape of Thursday's 88-73 loss at No. 13 Arizona. The players were given the day off and went to see the controversial Nicolas Cage film, "8MM," at a theater near their hotel in Tempe, a USC spokesman said. Maybe watching someone else being tortured could help them forget their woes.

Barring practice mishaps, Arizona State will be healthy for the Rose Bowl game. The only somewhat prominent player who's out of the game is tailback Michael Martin. A starter for the season's first five games, Martin was beaten out by Terry Battle, then injured his neck against UCLA. The Sun Devils arrive Christmas Day and their first Citrus College practice is Dec. 26. Ohio State's and Arizona State's practices will be closed to the public.

They were 0-10 against Arizona--0-6 under Evans--since sweeping the Wildcats in 1995.

A little over two years ago, she was part of Mike Garrett's senior management team, helping guide the fate of USC athletics. Now, Lisa Love is in the big office here, the one with the sixth-floor view of Sun Devil Stadium and north to suburban Phoenix, with its buttes and camelbacks and thousands of newcomers every month. She is the queen of an empire that, until now, has always been run by kings.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Like many others before them, the USC Trojans traveled to the desert Saturday night in hopes of discovering themselves. They are still hopelessly, haplessly lost. It was their first game in a truly hostile environment, their first game against a credible spread offense, their first chance to objectively measure their progress after four games of controversy and crisis. PHOTOS: Sun Devils best Trojans in the desert They are still going steadily, stunningly backward.
