In one of several new construction projects triggered by the explosive growth of the local entertainment industry, a 27-acre junkyard in Sun Valley has been leased for conversion into 16 new sound stages for film production. Sam Adlen, owner of Aadlen Brothers Auto Wrecking, signed over his Sun Valley property to a group of investors last month, said Jerry Martinez, Aadlen manager. The investors, whom Martinez would not identify, plan to finish the new studios by the end of this year, he said.

A California Highway Patrol officer fatally shot a man Saturday who was wielding a metal object on a freeway offramp, a CHP spokesman said. The officer shot the man about 3:30 p.m. at the Sunland Boulevard offramp on the Golden State Freeway, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball. The officer was exiting the freeway when a woman flagged him down. She said a man hiding in the bushes assaulted her, Kimball said. As the officer approached, the man charged him and the officer fired, Kimball said.

Debris falling from a collision between a big rig and another vehicle on the southbound Golden State Freeway caused a 10-vehicle accident on Hollywood Way below, authorities said. The accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. near the main offramp to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, California Highway Patrol Officer Vince Ramirez said. About 10 victims were evaluated and two were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Proudly billed as "L.A.'s Own," compost culled from yard trimmings and other bio-solids will be given out free this weekend to residents who visit the city of Los Angeles' compost site in Sun Valley. SUN VALLEY The body of an 18-year-old woman was found about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of a home in the 11200 block of Blythe Street, police said. Nicole Haas was shot at a different location and then left on the driveway less than a mile from her Sun Valley home, LAPD Officer April Harding said. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call LAPD detectives at (818) 623-4016 or (877) 529-3855.

A Sun Valley woman in her 70s was hit by a car while crossing a street and died of her injuries, police said Tuesday. Gabriela Mexicanos was not in a crosswalk when she was struck about 6 p.m. Monday at Webb Avenue and Rialto Street, Officer James LaForce said. The driver will not be charged, officials said. Mexicanos, 76, was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where she died.

An elderly man who died in a fire at a three-story apartment building in Sun Valley has been identified as Essa Lalahzari, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner said Wednesday. An autopsy on Lalahzari, who was thought to be about 80, is scheduled for today.

The man charged with killing a Burbank police officer pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, according to the Los Angeles district attorney's office. David Garcia, 19, entered a plea in a Pasadena courthouse and was ordered to return to court Jan. 28 to set a date for his preliminary hearing. Garcia is accused of killing Officer Matthew Pavelka on Nov. 15 after a shootout in a hotel parking lot near Bob Hope Airport.

A 25-year-old man was fatally shot on a dance floor at a party early Sunday when three uninvited guests started a fight and two of them opened fire, police said. Abraham Garcia of Canyon Country was taken to a local hospital, where he died, said Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman Adriana Sanchez. She said officers believe the shooting, which occurred in the 7400 block of Craner Avenue, was gang-related because some of the 40 party guests had gang affiliations.

Two people died Tuesday when a man driving a stolen SUV ran a red light and crashed into two cars in Sun Valley, police said. The 4:30 p.m. accident at Telfair Avenue and Sheldon Street occurred moments after the SUV driver had been confronted by undercover police officers in a nearby parking lot after they found that the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver sped away and struck a Mercedes Benz and a Honda, then overturned, said LAPD Officer Jason Lee. Two women in the Honda died.

Things will be looking a little brighter on Sunland Boulevard from now on. On Wednesday night, nine new street lights clicked on above the busy northeast Valley thoroughfare. The lights were installed on the stretch of Sunland between the Golden State Freeway and San Fernando Road and replace three lights that residents and business owners said were too dim.

State Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) on Tuesday persuaded the state Integrated Waste Management Board to hold a hearing within 60 days in Sun Valley on a proposed expansion of Bradley Landfill. The board postponed a decision on extending Bradley's height by 10 feet after Alarcon said few in the community were aware of the proposal.
