The Silicon Valley Urgency Fund has awarded $2 million to 38 regional nonprofit organizations. Each received a grant of $5,000 to $175,000. EBay co-founder Jeff Skoll initiated the fund in October with a grant of $2.5 million. It was an effort to persuade others to help nonprofits suffering a drop in donations because of the Sept. 11 attacks and the recessed economy.

After 2 1/2 years on the job and $6,000 in training, Marko the police dog was deemed a flop and "fired" from the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department, a police spokesman said. "It's hard to say why the dog wasn't a good police dog," Capt. Steve Pigott said. "His performance just was not very productive." Marko, a German shepherd who joined the force in January, 1987, was replaced by a young upstart named Gauner. Three hours into his first job, Gauner made his first "find"--a suspect in hiding.

Lockheed Martin Corp.'s missiles and space unit said Friday it will cut as many as 2,500 jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area. The No. 2 defense and aerospace company said 1,000 to 1,500 workers will be fired and the remainder will leave the company through retirement or other forms of attrition. The cuts represent about 26% of Lockheed's missile and space workers in the Bay Area.

Question: I'm a new manager of a small apartment complex and would like to know how to figure out prorated rent for February 2007. Is it the same as if the month had 30 or 31 days? Answer: Even though February 2007 has only 28 days, the calculation to determine prorated rent is the same as if there were 29, 30 or 31 days. Prorated rent is used for tenants who will not be occupying a property for a full month and are responsible for partial rent.

Question: I moved a few weeks ago and disagree with a deduction for rent from my security deposit. The statement said I am being charged 30 days of rent because I didn't give a 30-day notice to move. I was a month-to-month tenant, and the rental agreement didn't say I had to give advance notice of my plans to move. I don't think the deduction is allowed. What do you think?

Question: I moved into my apartment in the middle of last month. At that time, I paid a full month's rent. The manager just handed me a three-day notice to pay the "prorated" rent for this month. I don't understand why I owe rent when I've paid until the middle of this month. Answer: When a tenant moves into a rental other than on the first day of a month, there are several ways payment of rent can be handled.

QUESTION: My rental agreement says, "Rent is due on the first day of the month unless that day is a weekend or legal holiday." Because the first day of August was a Saturday, I made arrangements with my landlord to pay the rent on Monday. He agreed to this date, but he gave me a three-day notice to pay rent or quit on Sunday. I think this notice was given too soon because my rent was not late based on the rental agreement clause. Am I correct? ANSWER: Yes.
