If you haven't yet seen the critically acclaimed romantic drama “Before Midnight” consider some binge watching of the “Befores” that came before. “Before Midnight” is only the latest creative collaboration by  director Richard Linklater and the movie's stars Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke. A ll three had a hand in writing these candid films. I did, and I have to say it was quite something to see it all of a piece. Begin, of course, with Celine (Delpy) and Jesse's (Hawke)

It may be easier to experience quality silent films these days than at any time since Al Jolson insisted to audiences, "You ain't seen nothing yet. " Take advantage of the largess and experience two classics in editions newly released for home viewing. Looking great in a new 20th Century Fox Blu-Ray plus DVD set is F.W. Murnau's classic 1927 film "Sunrise," a romance starring George O'Brien and Janet Gaynor that is so beautifully done it won an Oscar for "unique and artistic production.

"Sunrise" (1927), that high point of the German Expressionist influence in American films, is the appropriate opening for the County Museum of Art's tribute to F. W. Murnau, running Wednesdays at 8 p.m. through June 3 in the museum's Bing Theater. Designed by Rochus Gliese and luminously photographed by Karl Struss and Charles Rosher Sr., "Sunrise" is intensely stylized and was shot on an immense city set and in a vaguely European village constructed on Fox's back lot.

"Sunrise at the Oasis," an idyllic desert vision of beasts roaming among cascading waterfalls, palm trees and tropical flowers, won the Sweepstakes award at the 2014 Tournament of Roses Parade. Large colorful animals, including elephants, a camel, peacocks and a tiger, were created by a team from Dole Foods using a variety of flowers and ornamentals, including crushed beans, moss, spices and even dried cranberries. Late last night, thousands of fresh roses and other flowers were added as a final touch. The float's beauty and design was cited in awarding the coveted Sweepstakes trophy out of more than 80 entries at the 125th Rose Parade with a theme of "Dreams Come True.

Face it - we were born way too late. Barring a biblical revelation, we'll never know what the Beginning of Everything looked like, whether it was a Creation or a Big Bang or something else we haven't figured out. But after one sunrise on Haleakala, I do know what an epic earthly event looks like. You fly to Maui, take to your hotel bed nice and early, and ask for a wake-up call around 2:30 a.m. Then, even though this is a balmy Hawaiian island, you bundle up and drive up the slope of the dead volcano that dominates the island's geography.

Two years ago researchers outfitted an electric Toyota RAV4 with a set of test instruments and drove back and forth near four Los Angeles County freeways between 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., sampling the air. The results confirmed that in the early morning, concentrated plumes of air pollution from freeways can travel more than a mile downwind, exposing more residents than previously thought to harmful pollution levels. Most previous air quality studies, based on measurements taken during the day or evening, have found that vehicle emission plumes generally blow no more than about 1,000 feet downwind from a major roadway before they break up. But in the hours just before sunrise, weather conditions are different.

We staggered out of bed at 2 a.m., the three teenagers grumbling about whether any experience could be worth this much lost sleep. We were on our way to watch the sunrise from the top of Maui's 10,000-foot dormant volcano, Haleakala, where we would mount roadster bikes and follow a guide more than 33 miles down the mountain through Haleakala National Park (http://www.nps.gov/hale) to the small surfing town of Paia.

It's 5 a.m. on a rooftop parking lot in downtown Santa Ana and the night sky is just beginning to fade. Under a lamp's orange glow, people in hoodies and sweat pants emerge from the stairwell, wiping the sleep from their eyes and hugging themselves against the cold. "You guys ready?" asks Marc Payan, clutching a mug of coffee in one hand, his phone in the other. On his command, about 100 people lunge around the concrete lot, then quickly step into two long lines facing each other.

There are no regular tours to Alcatraz Island on Thanksgiving, but those willing to face the early hour and a chilly ferry ride can observe a special event. The Indigenous Peoples' Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering will take place around a bonfire on the Alcatraz parade grounds. Walt Disney Concert Hall - quite possibly Los Angeles' most photographed building - didn't come with a complete list of care instructions prior to opening. Architect Frank Gehry, the mind behind the $284-million structure, didn't know how the building's swooping stainless-steel arches would stay spotless. "Not only Frank Gehry but the window-cleaning consultant … were unsure how to clean certain areas," said Zane Britt, president of the Burbank-based Sunrise Window Cleaners.

Nancy Dushkin woke up early Thursday to catch the sunrise at Griffith Park . From Griffith Observatory, she photographed the sun peak over mountains in the distance. "The sunrise was spectacular," Dushkin said. Next time, she'll wake up earlier and hike to the top of Mt. Hollywood to watch the sunrise, she said. Dushkin used a Nikon D800. In response to Rosie Grant's letter (Calendar Letters, Nov. 30), first, let me say that I'm glad that she enjoyed Blake Edwards' picture "That's Life." Second, to clarify Julie Andrews' early morning walk past an apparent setting sun, I must remind you that the Santa Monica Bay is crescent-shaped. The coast line runs north-south in Redondo but curves around to run east-west in Malibu. Therefore, when you stand on the beach near Point Dume, the sun will rise over the water to your left and set over the point to your right.

El Amanecer is a sweet Salvadoran cafe in a neighborhood with a hundred of them, crowded with families during the daytime and dating couples at night, a two-story Spanish stucco thing blasting salsa music, encrusted with beer ads and soccer posters, fragrant with frying onions. It feels as much like an actual restaurant in Latin America as any place in Los Angeles.

It was a risk for director Richard Linklater to go so dark in "Before Midnight," the latest round of the romantic musings he began with his stars, Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, nearly 20 years ago. The illusions of a more pristine love in "Before Sunrise" have been shelved so that the tipping point in a relationship can be laid bare. A devastating fight is the centerpiece now, the teasing flirtations a distant memory. Though the gauzy beauty of the earlier films remains, as does a sun-drenched European setting, this time Greece, what you will remember, what you will feel compelled to talk about long after, is the fight.

NEW YORK - "Before Midnight," Richard Linklater's third film about the relationship between an American man (Ethan Hawke) and French woman (Julie Delpy), closes with what might be the series' piece de resistance : a 30-minute hotel-room argument between the couple. Brutal and witty, the power dynamic shifts back and forth between the pair, as one grabs the upper hand and the other snatches it back. The scene is so credible that at least one woman who'd seen the movie walked up to Linklater recently and told him she had begun to use some of the lines when she came to a disagreement with her husband.
