The Newport Harbor Art Museum on Friday launches its three-movie film series dedicated to "the many sides of the female psyche" with "Sunset Blvd.," the 1950 classic starring Gloria Swanson as a has-been actress who topples into madness during her comeback. The program, called simply "The Women," is one of two now in Orange County with a distaff leaning. UC Irvine opened its "Standing in a Different Light: No Longer Silent, a Woman Seizes Her Moments" series earlier this month.

Andy Kaufman died 28 years ago, but that won't stop his bawdy alter-ego Tony Clifton from re-appearing (in one form or another) at this celebratory event. Expect rousing tunes from his band the Cliftones and racy burlesque from the Cliftonettes, while an incarnation of the mustachioed lounge lizard himself manages to offend and/or delight everyone involved. Dazzling preview performances of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Blvd." at the Shubert Theatre in Century City (it opened this month in London) will light up November. In getting a performance for charity, connections help. Brooke Young of Hancock Park happens to be the granddaughter of the late Gloria Swanson, star of the 1950 film classic. Young rang up the Webber people in London on behalf of Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles and got a nod for the first American benefit preview Nov. 23.

The scene: The official opening night of "Sunset Boulevard," Andrew Lloyd Webber's extravagant musical based on the same-named 1950 Billy Wilder film. Celebs, studio chiefs and theater types sauntered into the Shubert Theatre at 6:30 Thursday for the show, then barreled over to Paramount Studios afterward for a black-tie party that included dinner and dancing on a sound stage. Reviews were mixed, with some ecstatic about the performance and others doing their best to say something nice.

They stare nonstop at the house at 10000 Sunset Blvd. She through binoculars. He with naked eyes. His right hand rests lightly on her shoulder. His left arm, upraised, is frozen in mid-gesture. "A little to the right," is what sculptor J. Seward Johnson Jr. imagined that the bronze man in the navy cardigan is saying to his female companion. That's the name Johnson gave them as one of his droll public artworks, with the political implication intended. Perhaps they should look leftward.

The first "Sunset Blvd." starred Gloria Swanson with William Holden in the 1950 Billy Wilder film. The newest "Sunset Blvd." stars Glenn Close with Alan Campbell in the 1993 Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Tuesday night at the American premiere at the Shubert Theatre, Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles starred too. It was the only Los Angeles institution that attempted to sell out the Shubert's 1,751 seats during the myriad preview nights.

It's the whole history of Los Angeles encapsulated," remarks author Gavin Lambert, gesturing around the tacky strip mall at the intersection of Sunset and Crescent Heights. "From the Garden of Allah . . . to this." Once upon a time, on this corner stood a lovely California Spanish mansion, featuring a swimming pool described famously--and inaccurately--as in the shape of the Black Sea.

Some 22 years ago, when Butterfield's on the Sunset Strip first opened, a kid from Guanajuato named Gerardo Olvera took a job there busing tables. Six years later, he had become the executive chef. Now, some 15 years after that promotion, Butterfield's is gone, and Olvera is part-owner of the restaurant replacing it, a restaurant that, incidentally, bears his name. According to the promotional hype, he's finally getting to cook the regional cuisine of his Guanajuato childhood.
