Once they got past the bitterness, anger and shock of Coach Kevin Smith's resignation, the Huntington Beach Oilers came alive. Energized by new coach Will Cummins and the spirited play of senior forward Drew McAthy, the Oilers have recovered from a dismal showing in the Marina tournament to win their first three games in the Sunset League. Smith resigned three weeks into the season after he admitted to being in violation of the Southern Section's "association rule."

The boys' soccer playoffs don't begin for six weeks, but that really isn't the case for Sunset League teams, which begin their own brand of the playoffs next week. "In our league, I really believe it will be harder to get into the playoffs than it will be to make a run in the playoffs," said Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith, whose seventh-ranked team completed the nonleague season with a 6-2-4 record.
