Marina 2, No. 2 Los Alamitos 1 (OT)--Laura Riegler scored the winning goal with three minutes remaining in overtime off a cross from freshman Heather Kindschi. Chelsea Davis gave Marina (11-11-3, 4-6) a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on a penalty kick. Los Alamitos is 17-4-3, 6-3-1. In the Century League: Canyon 1, Villa Park 0--Rebekah Anderson's first-half goal off a corner kick was all Canyon (13-6-5, 7-1-2) needed to clinch the league title. Villa Park finished 6-14-4, 2-6-2.

Fountain Valley had lost by one point to Mission Viejo, The Times' second-ranked team in the Southland, and by one touchdown to No. 14 Santa Margarita, but on Friday, the Barons finally landed the big one. Taking advantage of seven turnovers and scoring three touchdowns in the second half, No. 17 Fountain Valley beat top-ranked Los Alamitos, 21-16, in a Sunset League game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

Santa Ana 57, Marina 54--Chauncey Woolridge scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds for host Santa Ana (9-4, 1-0). Jose Chavez and Marc Contrares each scored 10 for Santa Ana, which led the entire second half. Sean Haselrig had 23 points for Marina (6-8, 0-1). Ocean View 72, Fountain Valley 52--Jim Harris and Marcel Tenberge scored 19 points each to lead visiting Ocean View (7-6, 1-0). Ryan Martin had 17 for Ocean View.

Once they got past the bitterness, anger and shock of Coach Kevin Smith's resignation, the Huntington Beach Oilers came alive. Energized by new coach Will Cummins and the spirited play of senior forward Drew McAthy, the Oilers have recovered from a dismal showing in the Marina tournament to win their first three games in the Sunset League. Smith resigned three weeks into the season after he admitted to being in violation of the Southern Section's "association rule."

In other Sunset League games: Ocean View 52, Edison 44--Ocean View (14-6, 5-3) got 10 points each from Nikki Vivion, Kristin Brun, Theresa Martini and Kristy Bell. Joan Paje led Edison (9-8, 4-3) with 18 points. Fountain Valley 41, Westminster 29--Julie Murdent had 19 points and teammate Michelle Kraviak had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Barons. Fountain Valley is 10-11, 4-4.

In other Sunset League games: Esperanza 63, Fountain Valley 53--Lindsay Foss scored 13 points and Monique Toney added 12 as host Esperanza (17-8, 5-5) upset fourth-ranked Fountain Valley (20-6, 9-1). The loss ends Fountain Valley's 11-game winning streak. Jennifer Ludwicki scored 16 points for the Barons. The Aztecs finished fourth and must hope for a wild-card berth.

Fountain Valley's Erin Avila stole an inbounds pass, got fouled and made two free throws with four seconds left in the game, giving the Barons a 50-49 victory over Marina in Sunset League girls' basketball Thursday at Fountain Valley. The victory clinches the league title for No. 5 Fountain Valley (19-5, 8-0). Marina (16-6, 4-4) falls into a tie for third with 10th-ranked Esperanza (16-7, 4-4).

Becky Toler singled in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive home Sandra Ross and give host Marina High School a 1-0 Sunset League softball victory over Fountain Valley Friday at Marina. Marina starter Willa Parchen allowed two hits in 10 innings, striking out eight and walking four. Fountain Valley's Rae Rice, who gave up four hits, struck out 12 and walked none. Marina is 12-9 overall and 2-2 in league play. Fountain Valley is 3-1 in the league. Fountain Valley had had a chance to go ahead with a runner on third and two outs in the top of the 10th.

The boys' soccer playoffs don't begin for six weeks, but that really isn't the case for Sunset League teams, which begin their own brand of the playoffs next week. "In our league, I really believe it will be harder to get into the playoffs than it will be to make a run in the playoffs," said Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith, whose seventh-ranked team completed the nonleague season with a 6-2-4 record.

In other Sunset League games: No. 6 Huntington Beach 2, Los Alamitos 0--Joel Murphy and Chancellor Daniels scored for Huntington Beach (15-4-2, 5-4-1). In the Century League: Foothill 3, Orange 0--Jimmy Grigas scored two goals and Steve Adams also scored for host Foothill (13-7-4, 6-1-2), which clinched at least a share of the league title. In the Empire League: No. 5 El Dorado 3, Cypress 0--Jay Larson scored two goals and Ryan Eldred had the other for first-place El Dorado (25-3, 9-0).

Verdugo Hills 32, Hollywood 20--After being benched in the first half for disciplinary reasons, Henry Davis ran for 140 yards and four touchdowns at Hollywood (0-10, 0-5). Davis ran 50 yards in his first carry and for one yard and a touchdown four plays later for a 14-7 lead in the third quarter. Hollywood's ensuing drive lasted one play, with Neil Gossard intercepting a pass by Chris Colon at the Sheiks' 45. Davis capped the 11-play drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
