Turn into the winding driveway hidden by foliage and a man in a suit greets you before offering complimentary valet parking. Staff members in lavender polo shirts guide you to a hallway where smoked salmon sandwiches garnished with olives and cucumbers await. Ceramic platters of cookies are plentiful and salads are served in Asian takeout boxes paired with chopsticks. Tiny jars of honey are available to accompany your tea. This is voting, Brentwood-style. "It just makes it an experience," said Erla Perez as she noshed on a salad at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel, located in one of Los Angeles' most affluent neighborhoods.

"Sunset Boulevard" is ready for its close-up. Billy Wilder's 1950 award-winning darkly satiric tale of Hollywood starring William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich Von Stroheim and Nancy Olson is making its Blu-ray debut Tuesday in a new digital restoration. This isn't the first digital restoration for "Sunset Boulevard," which earned 11 Oscar nominations and won three Academy Awards. "Sunset Boulevard" was restored a decade ago for its DVD release. "It was the first time that an entire film was scanned for restoration," noted Andrea Kalas, vice president of archives at Paramount Pictures.

You can almost hear the clanging of the typewriters in the writers courtyard at Hollywood's Sunset Gower Studios, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The Spanish-style courtyard of offices housed such scribes as Ben Hecht ("His Girl Friday") and Sidney Buchman ("Mr. Smith Goes to Washington") when the facility was home to Columbia Pictures. According to Brent M. Christo, sales and marketing coordinator for Sunset Gower and the neighboring Sunset Bronson Studios, one of the bungalows was the office of Oscar-winning producer-director Frank Capra ("It Happened One Night," "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town")

Two years and two months after demolition and reconstruction work began, a wider and stronger Sunset Boulevard bridge over the 405 Freeway is set to reopen Monday. The reopening marks a breakthrough in the $1-billion 405-widening project, which has created epic traffic jams and led to unprecedented full-freeway closures. The Sunset bridge was the first of several spans to go under the jackhammer, in July 2010, and will be the first to reopen. At 5 a.m. Monday, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and transportation officials will be on hand as workers remove traffic cones and open two new lanes on the busy bridge, traversed by as many as 22,000 vehicles on a typical weekday.

When last year's Sunset Junction festival in Silver Lake fell apart because of long-standing permit troubles, several nightclubs and business owners in neighboring Echo Park cobbled a last-minute replacement event that they called Echo Park Rising. This year, they had the luxury of actually planning for the fest. "It has been easier this year," said Liz Garo, the talent buyer for the Echo and Echoplex, who helped organize the event. To get a sense of the booking variety at the Sunset Strip Music Festival, which concluded three days of events with a street party Saturday in West Hollywood, it's instructive to look at a single snapshot moment within the roster. In one two-block span at dusk, it was possible to stroll through the event to see gigs by former teen idol and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” star Leif Garrett and his rock band at the Whisky A Go Go, or catch legendary O.C. power punks Bad Religion on one of the two Sunset Boulevard outdoor stages. At the same time at the Roxy, you could check out Das Racist, the Brooklyn rap trio best known for its songs “Michael Jackson” and “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” or walk into the Key Club, where former reality-music-show competitor Vicci Martinez of NBC's “The Voice” was trying to turn that fleeting prime-time moment into a viable career.
