Most UCLA football fans would say, "Who?" when asked to point out Sam Handler . That doesn't mean they haven't noticed him. Handler, the walk-on receiver who had Fabio -like hair, was easy to spot. Those locks earned him the nickname "Sunshine. " He has been harder to pick out this spring. Handler shed the hair for charity this past Christmas, donating it to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged people younger than 21 who had long-term hair loss because of medical treatments.

If ever there was a film that would have benefited from some ripped-from-the-headlines fervor, it is "Oranges and Sunshine," starring Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham. This too-quiet, too-sluggish film tells the nearly unfathomable true story of roughly 130,000 British children, wards of the state in the '40s and '50s, who were told their parents had died and that "oranges and sunshine" awaited them in Australia. Instead, they were shipped Down Under to draconian orphanages where they suffered sexual abuse and were forced into labor.

VIERA, Fla. - If the notion of keeping your friends close and your enemies closer appeals, Florida's spring training scene may be just the ticket. It's a chance to see whom the Dodgers might play in the regular season or - dare I say it? - in a playoff series. That and not having to moisturize every 10 minutes pretty much make Florida's Grapefruit League my preferred spring training destination. Not that I'm an expert on spring training or Florida or especially the playoffs, the latter having been an impossibility if you grew up, as I did, as a Washington Senators fan in the '60s.

Sony's efforts to gain a foothold in the highly competitive computer-generated animation market continue to generate mixed results, as "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" opened to a so-so $30.1 million this weekend in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates. Three other new movies -- "Jennifer's Body," "Love Happens" and "The Informant" -- all had soft debuts of $10.5 million or less. Accounting for three years of ticket price inflation and the fact that 59% of theaters playing "Cloudy" charged extra for digital 3-D screens, its launch was only a little stronger than Sony's first animated film, "Open Season," which collected $23.6 million on its first weekend in late September 2006.

TORONTO -- How far would you walk for a fun screening? Would you walk 500 miles? And if you were told you were only halfway there, would you walk 500 more?   I know, I know, too easy. But it's an appropriate question to ask for "Sunshine on Leith. " The Scottish musical is a set of interconnected love stories based on the music of the Proclaimers. And given how enjoyably airy it is, people have been lining up to see it, if not pounding the pavement until they start havering. The Toronto International Film Festival can be a place of rigorous drama, where even the comedies come with a spoonful of vinegar.

SEATTLE - It's been three months of almost unrelenting sunshine in the Pacific Northwest, day upon day of blue skies, balmy temperatures, barbecues that don't have to be covered with tarps. What many are secretly thinking, but are almost afraid to say out loud: Thank heaven it's almost over. Seattle doesn't do dry. And the line of weather systems now stacked up across the Pacific ready to land like enemy planes, starting Friday, is being quietly welcomed by a collaborating public tired of watering its gardens and of being all cheerful . The National Weather Service says a record-breaking dry spell that imposed 80-degree temperatures and higher between July and September is about to be overcome by the unrelenting drizzle and gloom that characterize a proper Northwest late autumn.

Credit ABC with daring to be different. While most of the Friday-night TV audience has demonstrated clearly its preference for the mindless escapism of "Dallas," "Falcon Crest" and "Miami Vice," the third-place network is countering tonight with two new series that favor sardonicism and cynicism. The first, "Mr. Sunshine," premiering at 9 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42, is a comedy about a blind man who has recently separated from his wife; the second, "Joe Bash," at 9:30 p.m.

Brightness has never seemed as menacing as it does in "Sunshine," the nail-bitingly tense science-fiction thriller that emphasizes both the fearsome power of our friend the sun and how bereft we earthlings would be without its warming rays. "Sunshine" is the latest film from British director Danny Boyle, whose eclectic resume, including "Millions," "Trainspotting," and "28 Days Later," reveals a fierce disinclination to make the same film twice.

The knock against Neil Simon in the early days was that he cared more about his punch lines than his characters. "The Sunshine Boys," his 1972 play about the rocky reunion of a pair of elderly vaudeville comics, attempts to turn this playwriting vice into a virtue. Wisecracks come as naturally to these shambling funnymen as drawing breath. And though arthritis has set in, they still relate to the world as if it were the setup for a slapstick routine - locks refuse to open, a TV (unplugged)

Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch blow into a downtown steakhouse like a comedy hurricane. They've arrived straight from rehearsal for their upcoming show, "The Sunshine Boys," at the Ahmanson Theatre, and the tone of their entrance shtick owes something to the rapid-fire joking favored by the vaudeville comedians they play in the show. Hirsch is tall and thin with a full head of mussed salt-and-pepper hair. DeVito is short and round and sports a Friar Tuck-like ring of longish white hair.

Actor David Krumholtz has left the upcoming revival of Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys" at the Ahmanson Theatre. The production, starring Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch, is scheduled to begin preview performances Sept. 24. A spokesman for Center Theatre Group said that Krumholtz's departure from the play was due to "personal reasons. " He said that Krumholtz left the production early last week, the second week of a five-week rehearsal process. A representative for Krumholtz wasn't immediately available to comment.

A high pressure system heading into San Diego County today is expected to build through the weekend--blocking clouds and clearing skies for more sunshine and above average temperatures by Sunday. May is typically a cloudy month, with a 58% average sunshine probability at Lindbergh Field. According to Wilbur Shigehara, a National Weather Service forecaster, a "sunshine recorder" atop the weather service building at the airport counts the time the sun shines.

The "Little Miss Sunshine" minibus is fueling up to head cross-country again, this time from the West Coast to New York. The stage musical based on the Oscar-winning 2006 movie will reportedly open at the off-Broadway Second Stage Theatre in New York next season, with previews expected to begin in October. A spokesman for the company didn't respond to a request to confirm the news, which was first reported Wednesday by the New York Times. Laura DiLorenzo, director of marketing and communications at Second Stage, said she was unable to comment on the matter.  PHOTOS: Hollywood stars on stage "Little Miss Sunshine" debuted in 2011 at the La Jolla Playhouse.
