The City Council has unanimously approved a plan to build a recreational facility, including a golf driving range, at the site of an abandoned school. Super Sports Inc. and the Orange Unified School District received the city's endorsement last week to build a golf practice range with 100 tees at the former Peralta Junior High School site, 2190 N. Canal St. The facility will also feature chipping bunkers, putting greens, a golf academy and a pro shop.

Trucks already are hauling mountains of dirt around the grounds of what was once the Peralta Middle School as part of a project to transform it into a giant sports facility that will open early next year. The Orange Unified School District last month gave Super Sports Inc. a 20-year lease for the school, which has been closed for nearly 10 years and more recently had become the haunt of vandals.
