A supercross race scheduled Jan. 19 at Dodger Stadium will be moved to Angel Stadium in Anaheim because of off-season improvements being made at Dodger Stadium. Supercross is the stadium version of motocross, or off-road motorcycle racing. And the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series already has two of its first five races next season scheduled at Angel Stadium: The season opener Jan. 5 and on Feb. 2. The series' organizer, Feld Motor Sports, announced Friday that the Jan. 19 race also would be shifted to Angel Stadium.

Ryan Dungey won his first supercross race of the season Saturday night in the series' third and final season stop at Angel Stadium. Dungey, the 2010 champion in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, took an early lead and never relinquished it during the 20-lap main event. Davi Millsaps was second, Justin Barcia came in third and James Stewart finished fourth in front of a crowd of 41,294. Reigning series champion Ryan Villopoto, who had won the two previous races, finished eighth on his Kawasaki.

As the sold-out crowd of 45,050 roared at the start of the pre-race rider introductions at the supercross series' season opener at Angel Stadium, one rider was noticeably missing: James Stewart. At first no one was quite sure why Stewart, the series champion in 2007 and 2009, was not on his Yoshimura Suzuki motorcycle. After all, the Floridian had posted the fastest time during qualifying. But it turned out that during practice Stewart also had twisted his right knee, so he used the time during the rider introductions to ice and elevate the knee.

Ricky Carmichael's bid for a record-breaking 14th consecutive supercross victory came to a horrifying end Saturday night when the 22-year-old landed head first on the track following a crash in the main event at Edison Field in Anaheim. Carmichael, the defending supercross champion, was in second place midway through the fifth lap of the 20-lap final, trailing eventual winner David Vuilleman of France, when he cleared a small jump and landed on his front wheel on the other side.
