The Supreme Court asked Congress on Tuesday for $18.7 million to operate the court in the next fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1. The request is $854,000, or 4.8%, higher than the court's current budget. It includes slightly more than $16 million for salaries and $2.66 million for care of the court building and grounds. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor told a House Appropriations subcommittee that most of the increase is for inflation and mandatory expenditures.
