The second annual Surf Open Acapulco gets underway next week on the punchy Mexican beach break at Revolcadero Beach. The only question now: Will they get big waves? The July 2-7 event, hosted by the Fairmont Acapulco Princess will feature surfers from 12 countries who will compete for $100,000 in prizes. The contest is sanctioned by the Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP). Considered a good training ground for up-and-coming talent, the competition has four-star status, giving young surfers a chance to establish a name on a global scale by earning points to compete in the ASP six-star and prime-rated events.

The hot doggers will be out in force Saturday at San Diego County's Imperial Beach when a canines-only surf competition raises funds for charity. It will benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . Surf apparel company Quiksilver Inc. hasn't given investors much to be stoked about in recent years. The Huntington Beach company owns some of the biggest brands in action sports: Quiksilver, Roxy, DC and others. Yet it has lost money each of the last six years and is expected to post a loss this year too. So, what's the deal? Analysts note a slowdown in the action sports industry, increased global competition and, perhaps, a loss of focus. And the company's less successful brands hurt its performance.

Hard to imagine, but in the 1950s there were no more than a couple hundred surfers in Southern California. Spying one of these early adopters gliding across the waves was a rare treat. Rarer still were the people who photographed them. They captured the early legends of modern surfing before they became household names. And they caught the spirit of an emerging California beach culture that was soon to sweep across the nation. At the time, no one thought this was history in the making.

Although Cypress, Calif.-based Vans originally rolled to fame as a skate shoe brand, the VF Corp.-owned action sports label is set go big in its debut as the title sponsor of the U.S Open of Surfing when the event returns to Huntington Beach on July 20-28. In addition to men's, women's and juniors' surfing competitions, the eight-day event will include a longboard event called the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational, the details of which we're a bit unclear on. (What we are clear on is that the duct tape part has nothing to do with sponsorship -- since that partiular event is being sponsored by Pacifico.)

This post has been corrected. See the note at the bottom for details. Surf Air, the membership-only airline based in Santa Monica, made its first flight Wednesday from Burbank to the Bay Area. The airline offers members unlimited flights up and down the California coast for a monthly fee of $1,650. The airline, which flies small eight-passenger aircraft, is expected to fly four round trip flights per day between Burbank and San Carlos, which is about 24 miles south of San Francisco.

At Olympic High, Santa Monica's alternative school for students who have struggled in traditional programs, inappropriate behavior is not uncommon. But what a veteran English teacher saw on the computer screen of a student named John Zawahri stopped him cold. The solitary teen who regularly ditched class was surfing the Internet for assault weapons, the teacher recalled Monday. Alarmed, he sent Zawahri to the principal's office. Within days, the police were involved and Zawahri was admitted to UCLA's psychiatric ward.

The Tommy Hilfiger brand is hitting the SoCal roads this summer to promote its new Surf Shack collection of beachy keen clothes. The limited-edition collection, which is already in stores and available online, is apparently (and we quote) "inspired by the warm waters of Malibu, Australia's Gold Coast and chilly Atlantic swells in Biarritz. It's sunset drinks at the cottage, late-night beach bonfires and après surf clambakes. " We've never been to an après surf clambake, but imagine we could find something suitable in the sand-and-sea-themed capsule collection. The 12-piece women's collection includes pieces like chambray playsuits, white blazer and pleated dresses suitable for wearing over hibiscus-print bikinis or swimsuits festooned with anchors.

Guess Fox has its understandable priorities, which will leave those wanting to watch the Wednesday and Friday Dodgers games scrambling. Fox, in the last year of its contract with the Dodgers before they are scheduled to move to Time Warner, will broadcast the Clippers games on those two nights on PrimeTicket. The Clippers have already won their first division title and spot in the postseason, but then will still be on Fox in 2014. For those wanting to watch the Dodgers, that means searching for where the game will be televised, if at all. Below is a list of channels on which the various cable providers will move the games: AT&T -- 696, 1696 (HD)
