Ventura County Supervisors John K. Flynn and Susan K. Lacey on Thursday recommended that Assistant Auditor Thomas Mahon be appointed to complete the two years remaining on the term of Auditor-Controller Norman Hawkes. Citing health reasons, Hawkes announced last month that he was taking early retirement. Mahon has been with the auditor-controller's office since 1970 and has been the assistant county auditor since 1973. He has been responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office.

Moving to keep Ventura Avenue's tiny library open at least through December, 1994, Ventura County supervisors Tuesday accepted $38,000 in donations for the facility's operating costs. The money, presented to the board by Ventura City Councilman Gary Tuttle and several library patrons, was collected through both private and public donations after the county announcement more than two months ago that the library would be closed because of financial problems. Ventura County Supervisor Susan K. Lacey is seeking applicants to fill a seat on the Ventura River Valley Municipal Advisory Council. The vacancy is open to residents in the areas of Casitas Springs, Creek Road, Ojai Highlands and Villanova Road. The five-member council is an elected body that advises the Board of Supervisors on land-use proposals and government issues in the Ventura River Valley from Casitas Springs to Ojai.

County Supervisor Susan K. Lacey has been named to one of 12 committees that make policies for the nationwide organization of counties. Lacey, who represents the Ventura-based 1st Supervisorial District, was named recently to the Human Services and Education Steering Committee of the National Assn. of Counties. The committee will be composed of about 50 county officials who will meet during the next year to discuss issues important to county governments.

Lacey and her lone challenger, Ventura City Councilman James Monahan, filed candidacy papers Thursday for the supervisorial district encompassing Ventura and parts of the Ojai Valley. The local chapter of a national women's organization will meet Wednesday to come up with its list of endorsements for county supervisor. The Ventura County chapter of the National Women's Political Caucus has already written up a tentative list of endorsements, including incumbent Susan K. Lacey in the 1st District, candidate Kathy Long for the 3rd District and candidate Arlene Fraser for the 5th District.
