THERE may come a time when Robert Downey Jr. can have a conversation about something other than his "comeback," but this isn't it. "Such a good actor," people have been saying for years, using a tone of wistful regret normally reserved for a fat girl with a pretty face. Now, watching as Downey nimbly carries the odd and shifting weight of Shane Black's upcoming comic-noir-thriller-romance, "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang," it is tempting to heave a sigh of relief and say, "He's back."

Caution: Reading these cookbooks may be hazardous to your health. That's what the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine suggests in releasing its list of the five worst cookbooks of 2010. "They use some of the worst possible ingredients in terms of nutritional profiles," Susan Levin, nutrition education director for the nonprofit organization, says in a Hartford Courant story.  "They're using lots of heavy cream and butter and going all out in terms of fat and calories. " Gordon Ramsay’s "World Kitchen" tops the list.

Re "Low-fat diet not tops for weight loss," July 17 As a dietitian, I'm concerned that the public is once again being misled about the safety and effectiveness of the Atkins diet. The recent weight-loss study, which was funded in part by the Dr. Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Foundation, compared a low-carbohydrate diet to a low-fat diet containing 30% of calories from fat. But a truly low-fat diet would contain less than 10% of calories from fat. Study participants on the so-called low-fat diet reduced their total fat intake by only 1.4% -- hardly enough to make a difference.

" The group supports "compassionate and effective medical practice, research and health promotion," according to its website, and is against animal research and testing.

There are lots of little chamber music societies around, but Chamber Music Palisades is one that seems to be getting things right. Its fifth season opened Tuesday at St. Matthew's Church with the world premiere of a striking piano quartet by Gernot Wolfgang at the center of the program. The Austrian-born composer told the audience in Pacific Palisades that his concert music involves solving jazz/classical fusion problems.

At the foot of the Topa-Topa Mountains this week, a few dozen painters discovered what it's like to step into their canvasses. Accustomed to working indoors, the artists left the artificial light of their studios to stroll into the sunlit meadows, hills and streams that became the subjects of their drawings.
