The 42-year-old daughter of LSD guru Timothy Leary died two days after she apparently used a shoelace to hang herself from the bars of her jail cell in Los Angeles, authorities said Thursday. Sheriff's deputies discovered Susan F. Martino, also known as Susan Leary, during a routine check of her cell Monday morning at Sybil Brand Institute, a Los Angeles Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said. The checks are made every 20 minutes.

The daughter of 1960s LSD guru Timothy Leary was again ruled incompetent to stand trial for attempted murder in the 1988 shooting of her sleeping boyfriend. Superior Court Judge Terry Smerling said Tuesday that Susan Martino, 42, was unable to understand the charges against her and committed her to a state psychiatric hospital until she could be found fit. In 1989, a judge found Martino unable to stand trial on the charges. She could be held for up to 14 years if she does not recover.

A Glendale judge has ordered the daughter of 1960s LSD guru Timothy Leary to stand trial in the attempted murder of her live-in boyfriend. Susan Martino, 41, also known as Susan Leary, is accused of shooting Joel Chavira, 38, in the back of the head Dec. 18 as he slept in the Glendale apartment that they shared. The bullet was removed from the base of Chavira's skull by surgeons at St. Joseph's Medical Center.

The daughter of LSD guru Timothy Leary, sentenced to a mental hospital for the criminally insane for trying to kill her boyfriend, has died after hanging herself with a shoelace in a county jail cell, authorities said today. Susan Martino, 42, also known as Susan Leary, was found Monday morning hanging by the shoelace, tied to her cell bars at Sybil Brand Institute for Women in East Los Angeles, Sheriff's Deputy Mary Landreth said. She died at 6 p.m.
