We all think we know what to expect from a great sushi meal in Los Angeles, a progression of fish and rice that runs from the vinegared dish at the beginning to the warm crab hand roll at the end. If we are in a restaurant influenced by Nobu Matsuhisa, there may be some ceviche or spicy tuna along the way; if we are at a modern sushi bar, there may be cooked oysters or a salad. So the last thing I was expecting on my first visit to Shunji Japanese Cuisine, the Westside restaurant that is the newest darling of local raw-fish cognoscenti, was a bowl of vegetables, served at the sushi bar, at the point in the meal where you might be expecting an elaborate sea urchin presentation or a saucer of tuna nuta . Shlomo Bar Aba and Lior Ashkenazi play father and son philologists with differing views on how to research the Talmud; when the father wins an award that was meant for the son, the latter has to find a way to prevent his colleagues from righting the wrong, lest they shame his old man. Cedar gets across the history of these two - and the nature of their professions - by using every stylistic trick at his disposal, from direct addresses to the camera to on-screen text, aiming to show how even something as remote and imposing as the word of God can be personalized through the art of interpretation.

Paula Deen, welcome back. The Queen of Southern Cooking who made a guest appearance on "MasterChef" has had a rough go of it as late, battered and deep fried by the media after she revealed that she had diabetes, hid it from the public, and oh, by the way, is now touting a new diabetes drug. But here's the reality: Everyone outside the media? They don't care. Leave Paula Deen alone already. She reminds everyone of their momma -- either the momma they had, or the momma they have, or the momma they wish they had -- so just get off her back and let her do her thing.

A beachside location, indoor-outdoor seating, live Hawaiian music and plenty of fresh fish make CanoeHouse the place for a romantic splurge or special occasion.

Truffles shaved onto wild-caught yellowtail sashimi or kanpachi nigiri splashed with black caviar might begin your omakase at Got Sushi? Close your eyes and for a moment it's easy to forget that this tiny sushi bar is squeezed into a corner of King's Burgers, a fully operational burger joint in Northridge. Loews Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev., is teaching kids how to mix fun with the art of sushi in a series of classes dubbed SushiSKool on the first Saturday of each month. The next one is July 2. Chef Osamu Fujita, a third-generation sushi chef, guides grade-schoolers through teens through the basics of ordering, using chopsticks and sushi etiquette. Participants sample items such as as gari (pickled ginger) and wasabi (Japanese horseradish) while making sushi and sipping ocha (green tea)
