It's not unusual for alternative and punk-rock bands to carve out a niche without major-label support. In fact, that's still pretty much the general idea. But in adult-pop circles, it's virtually unheard of. Very few new and independent acts break through on star-powered airwaves where the Whitney Houstons, Celine Dions, Phil Collinses and Barbra Streisands rule. Laguna Beach's Suzy K is shaping up to be one of the rare exceptions.

James feels "cheated and used." Suzy calls James a "liar, know-nothing, nut, jerk and a snake." Plotlines from some soap? Not exactly, but a snarly feud between Big Apple gossip scribes James (Revson of Newsday) and Suzy (a.k.a. Aileen Mehle of the Post) is unfolding in their papers--to the delight of inquiring New Yorkers. The problem: Suzy wrote about a recent Metropolitan Museum of Art costume gala--one she didn't attend. Whoops!

Co-chairs Barbara Grant and Della Koenig are making beaucoup progress on the Princess Grace Foundation-U.S.A. gala (Nov. 3 at the Beverly Wilshire) that will have Prince Rainier, Prince Albert and Princesses Caroline and Stephanie as its star attractions. Earlier this week there was a progress report, proudly presented in the midst of a cocktail party (hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, Chuck Pick's parking attendants, etc.
