The idea was hatched near Thanksgiving a few years ago as Derrick Johnson was stocking shelves in a supermarket late one night. Johnson watched a couple of guys stacking frozen turkeys in the meat department slide a big Butterball brand bird wrapped in netting with a bright yellow handle across the linoleum. Johnson marveled at the speed and accuracy of the turkey as it rolled past the frozen meats counter. He had to try it.

Patrick W. Moore, an audit investigator in Richmond, Va., is learning to talk turkey. Moore, whose phone number is similar to one for a turkey cooking hot line organized by Butterball of Swift Eckrich Inc., has decided to offer turkey tips to people who call him by mistake. "Normally, all my calls are from branches concerning home mortgage regulations and real estate laws," he said. "This adds a little spice to an auditing job."

The rate of new food-product introductions has slowed in recent months as manufacturers retrench after a series of marketing setbacks, according to an industry analyst who charts the field. In fact, the number of food and household items that will enter retail channels this year is expected to increase only modestly over 1987's totals, according to Martin J. Friedman, editor of Gorman's New Product News.
