Hal Smith, 57, went back to juvenile hall Wednesday. Smith spent some time there after bashing his father's head with a rock when he was 12. "He deserved it," Smith said. "He was a drunk who used to beat up my mom." This time, Smith went voluntarily, on a mission to show arrested youths there are alternatives to being a criminal for life. A short stint in a juvenile hall changed his life, he said.

The young inmates in a Los Angeles County juvenile detention facility are an ocean apart from the most powerful man in the world's largest church. But this week, they were linked in an Easter Week rite of healing and humility 2 millennia old. Pope Francis chose to celebrate Holy Thursday by sinking to his knees to wash and kiss the feet of a dozen youth inmates in an Italian juvenile jail - breaking from the tradition of performing that ritual with priests in the ornate cathedrals of Rome.

The Mexican delegation that visited Sylmar Juvenile Hall on Wednesday came from Tijuana, a city that--like Los Angeles--must contend with social problems that originated elsewhere. An economic boom in the border region has doubled Tijuana's population to about 2 million over the past decade. But, combined with the continuing massive influx of emigrants bound for the United States, growth has also produced a small army of street children--an estimated 8,000 homeless youths from all over Mexico.

I want to leave dope and guns and gangs and violence behind. I choose life over death."
