Msgrs. Stephen E. Blaire and Sylvester D. Ryan were ordained as bishops Thursday, raising the total number of auxiliary bishops in the Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese to seven. In this country, only the New York archdiocese has as many active auxiliary bishops. Archbishop Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles was the principal celebrant of the Mass during ceremonies at St. Vibiana's Cathedral that attracted 26 bishops and about 350 priests.

Two priests have been named as the sixth and seventh auxiliary bishops of the sprawling Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Roger Mahony announced today. Msgr. Stephen E. Blaire, 48, the moderator of the curia and chancellor of the archdiocese, and Msgr. Sylvester D. Ryan, 59, were appointed bishops by Pope John Paul II. Mahony said the additions reflect the Pope's recognition of the growth of the archdiocese, which is home to about 3.

I loved your story about "my" island Santa Catalina ("The Secret Island," Feb. 22). I am a native, and one of the times I miss most in my life away from the island is the winter. It's best when there's a good storm. I know it has become customary, but the island is Santa Catalina, named after St. Catherine of Alexandria. I wish we islanders had developed a horror of hearing just "Catalina," as San Franciscans react to someone saying "Frisco!" Otherwise, you did good. Bishop Sylvester D. Catholic Archbishop Roger M. Mahony this week announced that Pope John Paul II has named two new auxiliary bishops for the Los Angeles archdiocese, giving the nation's most populous diocese a total of seven assistant bishops. "With some 3.5 million Catholics in the archdiocese, our Holy Father has recognized our continuing growth," Mahony said. Msgrs. Stephen E. The Most Rev. Harry A. Clinch, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey and a participant in the historic Second Vatican Council, died Saturday at his home in Santa Cruz. He was 94. A spokesman for the diocese said Clinch, a bishop for 46 years, died of complications from pneumonia. "Those whom Bishop Clinch served as priest and bishop remember him as a gentle and compassionate shepherd," Monterey Bishop Sylvester D. Ryan said Saturday.

A Camarillo priest has been named one of two new auxiliary bishops of the sprawling Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Roger Mahony announced Tuesday. Monsignor Sylvester D. Ryan, 59, rector of St. John's Seminary College in Camarillo, was appointed bishop by Pope John Paul II, along with Monsignor Stephen Blair, the moderator of the curia and chancellor of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, who will remain in that position. Ryan said he was overwhelmed.
