Synopsys Inc. on Monday agreed to buy Numerical Technologies Inc. for $250 million to fill an important gap in its product line. Synopsys, the world's second-largest maker of computer chip design software, will pay $7 a share, 89% more than Numerical's closing price Friday of $3.70. The purchase will cut Synopsys' fiscal 2003 profit before goodwill by less than 10 cents a share and will add to profit in fiscal 2004, the company said.

Synopsys will offer 0.6521 share for each share of Viewlogic. The transaction values Viewlogic at $28 a share, or 24% more than its closing share price Tuesday of $22.50.

Synopsys Inc. said it will buy Epic Design Technology Inc. for $427.1 million, or $31.25 a share, in a stock-swap merger that would combine two developers of engineering software. Shares of Mountain View-based Synopsys shares were unchanged at $41.75. Epic shares lost $1 to close at $30.25. Both trade on Nasdaq. Synopsys said it would issue 0.7485 shares of its stock for each outstanding Epic share. The acquisition values Epic at $427.1 million, or $31.25 a share.

Seeking to capitalize on NBC's perceived vulnerability in the Thursday slot following "Friends," the WB network has employed a novel means of inviting viewers into its new dramatic series "Gilmore Girls"--providing a brief plot synopsis at 8:30 p.m. recounting what they missed during the first half-hour. The WB introduced the midshow recap a few weeks ago, hoping to make it easier for "Friends" viewers to switch to the series and skip NBC's 8:30 p.m. comedy, "Cursed."
