A Texas holding company has acquired a 6.3% stake in SysteMed Inc. in recent months, in what could become another hostile takeover attempt on an Orange County firm. Officials at National Intergroup in Carrollton, Tex., would not comment on the acquisition of SysteMed stock by its unit, NII Health Care Corp., over the last two months.

In a joint effort with the Southland's air quality management district and prosecutors in four surrounding counties, Los Angeles city lawyers helped negotiate a $15-million settlement with a company accused of illegally selling smog-causing cleaning solvents to auto shops and other businesses across Southern California. The settlement with Safety-Kleen Systems Inc., finalized this week, provided some welcome news to Los Angeles city officials who are trying to close a $222-million shortfall this fiscal year.

Thomas J. Cassidy Jr., considered the father of the remotely controlled Predator drone that has redefined warfare in Iraq and Afghanistan, retired Monday from the San Diego-area aerospace firm that he helped found and grow. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. said Cassidy, 77, retired as president of its Aircraft Systems Group, which builds unmanned aircraft, including the Predator -- currently the most widely deployed unmanned aerial vehicle in the U.S. arsenal. The company, which disclosed the retirement after an inquiry from a Times reporter, said Cassidy was unavailable for comment.

SysteMed Profits: SysteMed. Inc. of Laguna Hills on Wednesday announced 1991 profits of $1.4 million, or 10 cents per share, contrasted with a 1990 net loss of $5.4 million, or 24 cents per share. Revenue for 1991 was $86.6 million, up from $60.4 million in 1990. For the fourth quarter, ended Dec. 31, the company earned $453,000, or 3 cents per share, contrasted with a net loss of $2.8 million, or 24 cents a share, for the last quarter of 1990. Revenue for the fourth quarter was $23.
