Whenever especially talented athletes are assembled on one team, some people think the job of the coach or manager is to simply write down the lineup and then sit back and enjoy the performance. Some may believe this true of Ron Newman, coach of the three-time indoor champion Sockers. But those critics wouldn't want to be in Newman's shoes now. When the Sockers play Tacoma tonight at 7:35 in the Sports Arena, Newman will have to be at his coaching best.

A 3.5 earthquake rattled the Tacoma area of Washington state early today but there were no reports of damage or casualties, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Peter Ward scored his first hat trick of the season Wednesday night to lead the Tacoma Stars past the Lazers, 5-3, in a Major Indoor Soccer League game. The Lazers, who play host to the Wichita Wings tonight at the Forum, are 16-17. Tacoma is 18-18. The game marked the coaching debut of Jimmy McAlister, named Tuesday to replace Alan Hinton. The Stars fired Hinton Monday.

The Lazers meet the Tacoma Stars tonight at 7:30 at the Tacoma Dome in a Major Indoor Soccer League Western division matchup. The Lazers (9-7) and Stars (10-8) both trail first-place San Diego by 2 1/2 games, but the Lazers are in second place with the better percentage. The Lazers won their last game, 7-6, over Minnesota in overtime.

The struggling Lazers, who will play host to Tacoma at 6 tonight at the Forum, released midfielder Dave Madden Saturday. Madden, in his second season with the club, was injured and played in only two games. The Lazers (6-21) have lost 11 straight games and are in last place in the Major Indoor Soccer League's Western Division. Tacoma (18-9) is leading the division.

The St. Louis Storm on Monday signed Preki, a forward who scored 219 goals in 247 games for the Tacoma Stars of the Major Soccer League during the past five seasons. Preki, 27, ranked fifth in the league with 33 goals and 39 assists last year.

The Seattle SuperSonics said they won't play any games in the Tacoma Dome next season. They have played eight regular-season contests in the Tacoma Dome during the past two seasons, averaging 8,789 fans. The rest of the home games were played in the Kingdome in Seattle. The Sonics are moving from the Kingdome to the Seattle Coliseum for the 1984-85 NBA season.

The Los Angeles Lazers, 3-0 in the Major Indoor Soccer League, will attempt to hold on to first place in the Western Division when they play the Tacoma Stars at 1:30 p.m. today at the Forum. Tacoma (4-1) has won four consecutive games and is led by the league's top scorer, Preki, who has 10 goals.

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 22,228 Tacoma pickups because the parking brake may not work, the automaker and federal safety regulators said. Tacomas from the 2005 model year with automatic transmissions are involved in the recall. Toyota spokesman John Hanson said the company recalled the vehicles after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received eight complaints. No injuries have been reported.
