NOTE: This is a blog about two guys attempting to lose weight over a six-week period.  They kicked off their weight-loss "strategies" on Jan. 10 . There's an empty box of chocolates that not long ago was full. This will probably not end well. Thursday was my first day off the training wheels of the Cookie Diet. And even though I ate a few cookies from morning till late lunch, I also ate some sushi with rice, a Nooodle microwave dinner that they sent me in the mail, one Smart Bagel and salsa.

The following is a blog documenting two Los Angeles Times editors' attempts to lose weight. It all began on Jan. 10 . Hey, remember that old saying, "I need to lose weight so I think I’ll stick a knife in my head"? Neither do we.  But it may just work (although it’s probably not endorsed by the AMA). A Chinese man apparently had a 4-inch knife lodged in his skull for the last four years.  He didn’t know it was there.  What tipped him off?

NOTE: This is a blog about two guys attempting to lose weight over a six-week period.  They kicked off their weight-loss "strategies" on Jan. 10 . Monday's dinner went so well we decided on a two-fer-Tuesday. The problem was the restaurant was a darkly lighted Italian place. The type of establishment that would give huge portions of pasta along with their heavily parmesan-ed sauce. At the office I was advised to get a chicken breast or a piece of fish.

The following is a blog documenting two Los Angeles Times editors' attempts to lose weight. It all began on Jan. 10 . My weight-loss partner, Tony, is turning into Elvis Presley. Well, he's going to Vegas.  And he'll probably have a few dozen grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches. You can see it a mile away.  He just quit something called the Cookie Diet (after being on it for about 10 days), ate an entire box of chocolates yesterday and is now heading to Las Vegas for a long weekend.

NOTE: This is a blog about two guys attempting to lose weight over a six-week period.  They kicked off their weight-loss "strategies" on Jan. 10 . People hated the cookies I'd been eating for the last two weeks. And people hated the principle behind the diet, although it rightly recommends, among other things, not to drink very much alcohol or eat the types of foods you'd see at parties or on street corners. Fortunately, I rarely care what people think, and I stuck with the six cookies and, at night, one serving of protein, and I lost about 5 pounds the first week.

Although it sounds like something you might hear on a cheesy infomercial at 3 a.m., it is possible. But, like anything, it's all about the moderation. My friend John e-mailed me last week attesting to his weight loss of 24 lbs. so far this year with a weekly pig-fest included. I have no idea why because most of the time what I try to make happen happens. Even if it's really hard. The formula is easy: prepare, study, surround yourself with smart people, then be fearless. Unfortunately, even though I had surrounded myself with smarties en route to Vegas, that was the only thing I had going for me as I continued my journey to lose weight.

Got lucky and got to take exactly who I wanted on a nice Valentine's Day dinner Monday night. We had the most interesting conversation, several shots of whiskey, and yes, America, some dishes that were going to help me get neither fit nor trim.
