Sebnem Kimyacioglu never lost confidence in her shooting. She just needed to get more comfortable. Kimyacioglu scored 16 of her career-high 24 points in the first half to help No. 9 Stanford beat Oregon State, 88-65, in a Pacific 10 Conference opener Saturday at Stanford. "That was a breakout game for Sebnem," Stanford Coach Tara VanDerveer said. "She really got it going." Kristen Newlin had 16 points to help the Cardinal (8-2) improve to 19-0 at home against the Beavers.

The four women's basketball teams remaining in the NCAA Division I tournament take their final step toward Sunday's championship game today when Tennessee plays defending champion Stanford and Connecticut faces Virginia. Stanford will try to become the first team to repeat as women's champion since USC in 1983 and 1984. "We enjoyed it a lot," Coach Tara VanDerveer said of being champion. "We liked all the things that went with it. We would like a second time around, but we know it won't be easy."

Early-season scheduling hasn't been easy on the Cal State Long Beach women's basketball team, but the 49ers hope to make the most of it when they tip off tonight at 7:30 against sixth-ranked Stanford at University Gym. Having defeated No. 7 Texas, 80-74, last Friday, No. 10 Long Beach (1-0) can make the defending NCAA champion Cardinal 0-2. Stanford lost to Tennessee, 95-80, Sunday at Knoxville.

Former WNBA coach and Stanford assistant Julie Rousseau has been hired as the women's basketball coach at Pepperdine, Athletic Director John Watson said. She replaces Mark Trakh, who is the women's head coach at USC. A Los Angeles native, Rousseau was an assistant, interim head coach and head coach with the Sparks for parts of the 1997 and '98 seasons. She spent the last four seasons at Stanford. "I have a lot of mixed feelings about leaving Stanford," Rousseau said in a statement.

Ruthie Bolton-Holifield is a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army reserve, but that's not where she learned to be tough. That came growing up in a family of 22. "This is who you want to bring into battle with you," said Tara VanDerveer, coach of the U.S. women's basketball team at the Goodwill Games. Bolton-Holifield is the leader of a team seeking its first gold medal in a major women's basketball tournament since 1990.

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Stanford senior Candice Wiggins became the Pacific 10 Conference women's career scoring leader Sunday in a 74-52 victory over Washington State. Wiggins passed Lisa Leslie's record of 2,414 points -- set at USC from 1991 to 1994 -- late in the first half and ended up with 24 points to move into the top spot with 2,424. The victory also gave the Cardinal the Pac-10 regular-season title. "I'm really happy for lots of reasons," said Wiggins.

Lisa McNamee, the girls' basketball coach at Estancia High School the past six seasons, says she has accepted a position as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford starting Oct. 1. "This is just a fantastic opportunity to work with one of the top programs in the country," said McNamee, The Times' girls' basketball coach of the year in 1991. McNamee, 29, guided Estancia to a 25-2 record and the Pacific Coast League title last season.

Both teams were playing for their seasons. UCLA guaranteed an extension, USC hopes it didn't get laid off. The Bruins beat their cross-town rival, 59-53, Saturday at the Galen Center in the semifinal of the State Farm Pac-10 women's tournament, advancing to today's title game against top-seeded Stanford. It will be UCLA's second appearance in the title game since the tournament started in 2002. The other came in 2006, also against Stanford, and the Bruins won that one in overtime.
