"Shy Boy" got rubbed out on a Fullerton street Sunday, not by a rival gang member but by college students armed with paint rollers. Although the moniker suggests bashfulness, Shy Boy was not timid about spray-painting his street name on several east Fullerton walls and eucalyptus trees, much to the disappointment of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Cal State Fullerton.

The scuffle on Cal State Fullerton's "Fraternity Row" started over a woman. Before long, gunshots were fired, windows smashed, and a fraternity some liken to "Animal House" had once again infuriated the neighborhood. That incident in April and others--including allegations of an attempted rape in August and 25 complaints to police about loud parties since mid-1995--have landed Tau Kappa Epsilon in the deepest trouble of any fraternity in campus history.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to revoke Tau Kappa Epsilon's permit to operate on Teri Place. Fraternity president Edgar Khalatian said the organization will consult with officials at its national headquarters and consider filing a lawsuit over the city's action. "We feel our constitutional rights are being violated," he said.

The party soon may be over for members of the troubled Cal State Fullerton fraternity that recently lost its permit to operate a house on Teri Place. The City Council on Tuesday night postponed a hearing on whether to revoke the fraternity's permit for good, resetting it for Feb. 3. Arms buildups seem to be in the news these days. For instance, the police log of USC's Daily Trojan newspaper carried a report of "students at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house firing potatoes from a tube-launcher into an adjacent parking lot." Security officers said "the matter would be referred to Student Judicial Affairs and Community Standards and cleared the location." A cease-fire was arranged.
