This is what you do for a living: Each day you admit a perfect stranger into your confined, isolated work space and you make a cold, hard-cash transaction. The nature of your business compels you to have a lot of dough on hand in this not very hospitable environment. The stranger knows this. You conduct similar transactions all day and into the night. Most times the deals are concluded successfully and everyone leaves happy. But human nature being what it is, you're inviting trouble, right?

The setting is grim, and the air stifling with tension. Six men sit on straight-backed chairs in a small waiting room, wearing dark business suits, white shirts and neckties knotted with nooselike firmness. No smile is visible here. Pulses pounding, they wait, as for the executioner's summons. Eventually, it comes. "Mr. Hollands, please." Barclay Hollands, 24, stands up and, with as much confidence as he can muster, strides down the hallway. "Good morning, Mr. Hollands. Be seated, please."

JERUSALEM - Israel is among the most security-conscious nations on Earth. F-16 warplanes scream overhead. Antimissile systems become national heroes. The spy agency Mossad enjoys near legendary status. So if, in the words of English writer Samuel Johnson, patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel, what better way to cover up one's misdeeds than by posing as a secret agent? Israel has been captivated by a certain Shimon Cooper, 51, a taxi driver who is accused of using such a ruse to kill his first and third wives, and vanish for days with his lover, using "secret missions" and "overseas assassinations" as a cover.

While the editing of theatrical movies for television is a fact of life, I do wonder what is the point of televising "Scanners" without a single exploding body scene, or "Taxi Driver" with Robert De Niro's famous "Are you looking at me?" monologue deleted. Both of these movies were heavily promoted during the weeks they were screened on local stations. Matt Okada, Pasadena

Japanese police arrested a U.S. sailor in the stabbing death of a taxi driver near an American base outside Tokyo. Olatunbosun Ugbogu, a 22-year-old Nigerian native, was arrested on murder and robbery charges, a police spokesman said. The spokesman said Ugbogu had confessed. Japanese officials reacted sharply. Public anger over the U.S. military presence is mounting after a series of allegations against American service personnel in Japan, where 50,000 U.S. troops are based. Ugbogu, a crew member on the guided missile cruiser Cowpens, is accused of stabbing 61-year-old taxi driver Masaaki Takahashi on March 19 in Yokosuka, home to the U.S. base just south of Tokyo.
