The Fullerton man who speaks four languages and coaches aquatic sports took state honors Friday for yet another ability: being a great day-to-day science teacher. John M. "Jack" Hawkins of La Habra's Sonora High School was honored as one of California's five teachers of the year. "I'm humbled, I'm overwhelmed and I'm exhilarated," Hawkins said Friday after a Sacramento luncheon where he and the other four were feted by state schools Supt. Delaine Eastin. High school teacher George Melvin Fairchild was ordered Thursday to stand trial on charges that he molested three female students and sexually harassed two others. Three girls allege that Fairchild touched them improperly while they were attending his class at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, according to Investigator Samuel P. Contino of the Fullerton Police Department. Two other girls said he made sexual comments, Contino testified.

A Dana Hills High School teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student during a science field trip in Inyo County, authorities said Tuesday. Michael W. Gaskins, 43, has been charged with one felony count of sexual battery and one misdemeanor count of annoying a child under 18, according to a criminal complaint filed Nov. 16 in Inyo County Superior Court. Gaskins has been suspended with pay since Oct.

A state appellate court has upheld a $300,000 jury award to a 16-year-old girl who became pregnant from her high school teacher. Gary F. Satrappe, a former teacher with Santa Ana Valley High School, appealed the jury's award claiming there were evidentiary and instructional errors in the lower court trial, the student's attorney said. Justices with the 4th District Court of Appeal unanimously rejected all of Satrappe's arguments in a 15-page opinion made public Thursday.

Anderson's "teaching tools"--animals of all kinds, including a 15-foot python, caged cockateels, wild deer mice, exotic fish and more in two rooms used to expose his pupils to wildlife. A former Santa Ana math teacher who fled the state just before being charged with molesting two male students was arrested Friday in Laredo, Tex., after being a fugitive for more than seven months, federal authorities said. Enrique Solorzano Provence, 37, a former teacher at Willard Intermediate School, had been charged in an arrest warrant issued April 11 with two counts each of felony child molestation and misdemeanor child annoyance involving two boys, 11 and 12 years old.

A Dana Hills High School teacher charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student during a field trip was placed Monday on a compulsory leave without pay, a district spokeswoman said. The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees, meeting in a closed-door session Monday night, placed Michael W. Gaskins on mandatory leave pending the outcome of his criminal case, which was filed in Inyo Superior Court on Nov. 16, district spokeswoman Jacqueline Cerra said.
