In his review of Gyorgy Ligeti's music (May 20), reviewer Timothy Mangan used the following sentence: "And the poetic 'Warsaw Autumn' (No. 6), with the encroaching chill of its harmonies, captures the falling leaves through a collage of descending lines drifting at different speeds." What the hell does that mean? I thought music, even avant-garde music, was about notes, chords, tempo, etc. This is why I ordinarily do not read music reviews. ANDRIUS V. VARNAS Redondo Beach

In this time when news is disseminated ever more quickly, we asked our critics to list the best of culture in 2013 in tweet form: Vijay Iyer, Mike Ladd. "Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project": Jazz meets hip-hop and poetry to detail the costs of war. Haunting. Charles Lloyd and Jason Moran, "Hagar's Song": A masterful duet-as-conversation, examining familiar and undiscovered ground with grace. Matana Roberts, "Coin Coin Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile": Family history as social history in a swirling mix of free jazz, opera and spoken word.

The emergence of Antawn Jamison as a contributor has had an effect on Jordan Hill's minutes. After averaging 18.8 minutes a game over the previous nine, Hill played just 14 minutes combined against the Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks. "There will be room for Jordan but his role has changed a little bit," Coach Mike D'Antoni said. Hill is a capable rebounder, collecting 4.8 despite just 14 minutes a game. Offensively, he's shot 44.1% from the field, low for a big man. Jamison is more naturally skilled offensively than Hill.

Saturday's Open Division regional football game between St. John Bosco and Corona Centennial produced 119 points, more than 1,300 yards in total offense and Centennial ran off 122 plays in a 70-49 loss to the Braves. This isn't your father's offense and the grandfathers would be rolling their eyes if they saw what's been happening. "We knew it was going to go that way," St. John Bosco Coach Jason Negro said. "When you have that many plays that a high school kid has to play . . . that's incredible.

This shouldn't be anything to sweat for UCLA. Sure, the Bruins play a Baylor team with a blur of an offense. It's nothing the they haven't seen before. The Bruins have generally handled spread offenses well. They routed Houston, beat Arizona State, destroyed Arizona and survived Washington State. TIMELINE: College football 2012-13 bowl schedule So seeing the Bears go full tilt in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Dec. 27 won't be an eye-opener. "West Coast, Pac-12, we've seen a lot of teams who run up-tempo offenses," linebacker Eric Kendricks said.

Ihave never been to Israel, but my friend Robin has, and she is convinced that the food at Tempo in Encino is as close to authentic Israeli cuisine as one can expect to find in the San Fernando Valley. "Taste the smoky flavor in the pita bread?" she says. "Heated over charcoal." She scoops up some eggplant tahini dip and nods vigorously. "The eggplant has it too, that wonderful grilled taste. This is what eating in Israel tastes like."

Update: The Lakers will reach the midpoint of their season-long six-game trip after playing Philadelphia, one of the league's biggest surprises. The young, up-tempo 76ers present a striking contrast to the older, plodding Lakers. "It's going to be a matter of whose style of play is dominant enough to win," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said.

Everyone wondered what a team like Oregon would do if it met Alabama on a field that could also serve as a laboratory beaker. Would Oregon's up-tempo offense fizzle when mixed with Alabama's bone-crushing defense, or explode like Mentos combined with Diet Coke? It turns out we didn't have to wait for this year's Bowl Championship Series title game to find out. We found out Saturday. Texas A&M's offense, seemingly not quite as lethal or fast as Oregon's, answered the question two months early with Saturday's 29-24 victory over top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

New USC Coach Steve Sarkisian will wait until spring practice to install the up-tempo, no-huddle offense he brought with him from Washington. Trojans quarterbacks are already looking forward to it. "I'm very excited," said starter Cody Kessler, who ran a spread offense at Bakersfield Centennial High. Fellow sophomore Max Wittek operated out of a more traditional pro-style offense at Santa Ana Mater Dei, but said, "I think I can move around well and do what's asked.

What speed will the Lakers' play this coming season? "We're going to play exactly how we finished off last year -- playing with a tempo that's right for us," Kobe Bryant said on media day Saturday. "We're not an up-and-down, run-and-gun type of team by any stretch of the imagination. But we'll use the strengths that we have. Pau [Gasol is] a good post player. I'm a good post player. Steve in pick-and-rolls can be effective. But you'll see us really dominating the game from the inside.

If you're fascinated by up-tempo college football offenses, here's an early-season survey of just how fast, or slow, your favorite team is playing. The study examines the first three weeks of the season so does not include last weekend's slate of games. The fastest-paced team is not Oregon, as you might have imagined. The quickest team out there was Brigham Young, which averaged 96 plays  in its first two games. The Cougars ran a play every 17.8 seconds. BYU is followed by Wyoming (80.3-play average through three games at every 18 seconds)

UCLA put pressure on two defenses Saturday: Nebraska's and its own. The Bruins scored four touchdowns in seven minutes, giving UCLA's defense little time to rest. Not that the players were complaining. "We love that stuff," linebacker Jordan Zumwalt said. "When we hold a team to a three-and-out and our offense scores right away, we're not going, 'Aw, shucks, we've got to go back on the field.' It's 'let's go do that again.'" UCLA's isn't the only defense playing faster to keep pace.

There was no small amount of schoolboy giddiness during the fourth quarter against Nevada. UCLA was pounding on the Wolf Pack, and three Bruins defensive linemen saw the future as now. Nose tackle Kenny Clark and defensive ends Kylie Fitts and Eddie Vanderdoes - all first-year freshmen - were ready to take the field at the same time for the first time in their college careers. "We all started getting pumped," Fitts said. "Before that game, we wanted to have one snap with all three of us in there.

This ranking may be more intuitive hunch than it is rooted in statistical study. The way I see it, Halley's comet comes around every 75 or 76 years and Texas football comes around every four. Texas has appeared in the Bowl Championship Series title game the last two times it has been hosted by the Rose Bowl, 2005 and 2009, so it seems feasible the Longhorns could ring out the BCS era with a return trip to Pasadena next Jan. 6. Texas has a cozier recent relationship with the Rose Bowl than several Pac-12 and Big Ten schools.

Eléctrico Gustavo, writ large on the back of buses, appears to be the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's newest source of renewable energy. Radiante Gustavo flashing on electric billboards luridly illumines the Southern California sky in competition with Nature and Her sunsets. Pasión Gustavo, in giant letters on Walt Disney Concert Hall, stirs Frank Gehry's steel. As for me, I'm preparing for the arrival this week of Gustavo Dudamel by charging my pocket Nikon.

When a rarely heard classical work finds its way onto a concert program, it often can leave listeners feeling as if they've encountered an unfairly forgotten masterpiece.  In the case of Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto, which the Los Angeles Philharmonic performed at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday under Bramwell Tovey's baton, with L.A. Phil concertmaster Martin Chalifour as soloist, the neglect seems perhaps more understandable.  ...
