Rafael Nadal had a spirited practice session Thursday at the BNP Paribas Open. He played with former Russian top-10 player Mikhail Youzhny, and crowds crammed four deep around the court trying catch a glimpse of one of the players. "Rafa, Rafa, Rafa, sign this, Rafa, Rafa, Rafa. " There's your clue. The draw was Nadal, the 26-year-old Spaniard who is ranked fifth in the world and who is playing his first hard-court tournament since Miami 11 months ago. Nadal missed the Olympics and the U.S. Open last year and this year's first major tournament, the Australian Open, because of knee tendinitis.

Chauncey Billups got therapy Wednesday for what the Clippers said is peroneal tendonitis in his left foot. Billups said there is no timetable for his return to playing again. "I'm not really practicing on the court yet," Billups said. "When I get to do that, then we can assess that. " Billups said the team doctors and Clippers trainer Jasen Powell have recommended rest for right now. "I'm just trying to let the inflammation go down," Billups said. Billups, who has played in three games this season, missed his eighth consecutive game with the injury.

Clippers guard Chauncey Billups didn't play Wednesday night because of what the team called "peroneal tendinitis" in his left foot. Billups and the Clippers said before the team played the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center that there was no timetable for his return. Billups said it's an "inflamed tendon" on the inside joint of the foot and that it's "not related" to the left Achilles' tendon injury that required surgery in February and sidelined him through the first 14 regular-season games.

HOUSTON - With a roll of the eyes as he walked to the team bus, Pau Gasol wasn't convinced he'd be healthy in time for the Lakers' game Friday against Oklahoma City. It's only their most important of the season so far. "I don't know," Gasol said, shaking his head. "I just don't know. " Gasol planned to sit at least two games because of tendinitis in his knees, a self-imposed exile that began Tuesday in Houston and would continue Wednesday in New Orleans. His knees were annoying him in recent weeks, his left more than his right, so he approached Coach Mike D'Antoni and asked to sit out some games.
