Terry Holland, the winningest basketball coach in Virginia history, was named athletic director at Davidson College, his alma mater. He will begin at Davidson on May 1, 1990, after coaching Virginia again in the 1989-90 season. Holland, 47, said he would lose money with his new one-year contract because of the loss of shoe, television and radio deals. Holland, who played at Davidson in 1962-1964 and coached there from 1969-1974, indicated he had no interest in the dual role of coach and athletic director at Davidson.

It won't count in Dean Smith's assault on Adolph Rupp's record, but North Carolina actually picked up two victories Sunday, first winning the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title game and later picking up another "W" when the NCAA pairings were announced. The Tar Heels rode their 12-game winning streak into a No.

Some things about Terry Holland are obvious, to use one of his favorite words. He is a good basketball coach. You don't put together a record of 362-173 in 18 years without being good, especially when the last 13 are in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He has a temper that's hard to miss when watching a Virginia game, especially since he's a gangly 6-foot-7. But people miss a lot when they look at Holland. It's easy to do, largely because he is not very forthcoming in public.

Let's hope his health had nothing to do with it. Let's hope Terry Holland simply decided to quit coaching college basketball because, at age 47, it was time to take a grown-up's job. Not that running an athletic department, as Holland will be doing as of next May, is any feet-on-the-desk, nine-to-noon snap. And especially at Davidson, which has not seemed to know where it was headed since Holland left 15 years ago for Virginia. Holland and Virginia made an ideal match that proved more successful than either surely imagined at the start.

A judge Thursday handed Virginia basketball center Olden Polynice a 30-day suspended sentence and ordered him to stay away from the store where he shoplifted a $17 pair of headphones April 30. Coach Terry Holland, in a statement, said he is recommending that Polynice, who had entered a no-contest plea, give up his athletic scholarship and leave the team. A university committee independent of the athletic department will determine in January if Polynice can rejoin the team.

After 13 months of an increasingly bitter contract dispute, the Long Beach police union and city management representatives reached a "conceptual agreement" Friday afternoon. Both sides hailed the agreement as a fair compromise, but a spokesman for the Police Officers Assn. said he did not know whether the rank-and-file will approve it. "We've got a lot of anger out there," said union Vice President Terry Holland.
