Using muscle under the basket and finesse from the perimeter, Glen Davis scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead No. 9 Louisiana State to a 64-52 victory over sixth-ranked Texas A&M on Tuesday night. "We didn't have an answer," Texas A&M Coach Billy Gillispie said. "He's a good player." Texas A&M (7-1) had won 14 straight regular-season games and had not lost at all since being eliminated by LSU in the second round of last season's NCAA tournament.

With flags at half-staff and "Amazing Grace" played at halftime, Texas A&M defeated rival Texas, 20-16, Friday in a game played amid mourning for the 12 people who died building a traditional bonfire. Before a crowd of 86,128--the largest ever to see a game in Texas--No. 24-ranked Texas A&M, 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12 Conference, was down 16-6 at halftime and pulled within 16-13 when Ja'Mar Toombs scored his second touchdown on a nine-yard run in the third quarter.

Army Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf is being recruited for chancellor of the Texas A&M University System and has expressed interest in the job, according to a report published Saturday. State Comptroller John Sharp told the Dallas Morning News the popular commander of Operation Desert Storm has been contacted about running the eight-campus system, which has been without a chancellor since December. Schwarzkopf, 56, has said he plans to retire from the military in a few months.

James Glenn, a freshman kicker for Texas A&M, collapsed before practice Wednesday and died later at a College Station hospital, school officials said. Glenn, 19, a walk-on from Clear Creek High in League City, was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m., CDT, at Humana Hospital-Brazos Valley, said Alan Cannon, Texas A&M sports information director.

A suffocating defense was all Nebraska needed to avenge last year's loss to Texas A&M. After a sluggish first half, the No. 9 Cornhuskers scored four touchdowns in the second and handed the No. 21 Aggies their first shutout in 11 years, 37-0, Saturday. Nebraska sacked Texas A&M's Randy McCown eight times, blocked two field goals and held the Aggies to 118 yards.

Texas A&M has informed the NCAA of a prominent alumnus' allegation that a recently banned booster was part of a secret attempt to organize a slush fund for payments to football players. Robert Smith, Texas A&M vice president in charge of rules compliance, said his office also will investigate the allegation. "This is not an issue for us unless there's reason to believe that this activity's going on now," Smith told the Bryan College Station Eagle.

Patrice Reado scored all 17 of her points in the second half and Texas A&M overcame the loss of Gant to beat Duke, 77-63, on Sunday night at Oklahoma City. Takia Starks added 15 points for second-seeded Texas A&M (29-7), which extended its winning streak to 12 games.

The Anteaters, ranked 60th in the nation, got their points from Oliver Schweizer, who defeated Cody Hubbell, 7-5, 7-6, in singles and teamed with Davis Matthew for an 8-5 doubles victory over Ryan Newport and Jorin Skube.
