Texas Tech and football Coach Mike Leach agreed Thursday on a new contract after months of contentious negotiations. Leach signed the contract shortly after he and Kent Hance, the university's chancellor, met for about two hours Thursday afternoon to hammer out an agreement. Hance said the negotiating part lasted only about 15 minutes. Weeks ago, Leach and Tech essentially settled on the financial terms of a five-year, $12.7-million deal.

If you are going to dinner with former Texas Tech football coach Tommy Tuberville and he agrees to pay for it, make sure you get your food to go. Devonte Danzey, a junior college offensive lineman who was being recruited by Tuberville to play at Texas Tech, told the recruiting website Wreckem247.com that Tuberville left the table in the middle of dinner in Lubbock on Friday night and never returned. Saturday morning, Tuberville was named the new football coach at Cincinnati. Danzey said he asked Tuberville how long he planned to coach at Texas Tech, but Tuberville didn't answer the question.

Texas Tech on Wednesday disclosed that it had reprimanded men's basketball Coach Billy Gillispie this year after learning he was exceeding NCAA practice-time limits. Red Raiders Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said the school reported the secondary violations to the NCAA and the governing body approved the penalty that Texas Tech had decided upon. The letter of reprimand came in January and included language that there would be "no tolerance for disregard of rules," Hocutt told the Associated Press after speaking to members of the local media.

Texas Tech Coach Tommy Tuberville was none too happy to be locked in a battle with lowly Kansas on Saturday, and his frustration came to the surface when he appeared to strike assistant Kevin Oliver after the team drew a penalty when it couldn't get the right special-teams personnel on the field. Tuberville said after the game that he was merely trying to pull his assistant off the field by grabbing his shirt, presumably by the collar since he managed to whack Oliver's headset to the ground with a big swipe of his hand.

Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree is determined to put his best foot forward. The problem: He definitely has a best foot. Crabtree, widely projected to be a top-10 selection in this spring's NFL draft, is dealing with a stress fracture in his foot that was just discovered by medical personnel at the NFL scouting combine. The injury, which he said he's had for about a year, will require surgery that will sideline him for as long as 10 weeks.

The halftime score of 35-7 between No. 4  West Virginia  and unranked Texas Tech in Lubbock is just what we expected. We did not expect Texas Tech, however, to have the 35. In what's shaping up as the biggest upset Saturday, Texas Tech is crushing West Virginia as it possibly puts a dent in  Geno Smith 's  Heisman Trophy  hopes. Texas Tech has the nation's No. 2 defense, but looked vulnerable in last week's 41-20 loss against Oklahoma. Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege is outplaying Smith so far, having thrown for 336 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.

It's understandable that Texas Tech Coach Tommy Tuberville would be frustrated to be locked in a tough game at home against Kansas, which entered the game seeking its first win over an FBS opponent this year. But Tuberville went too far Saturday when he was caught on video slapping the headsets off one of his assistant coaches. Then again, this is a school that has hired such hot-headed coaches as Bob Knight and Billy Gillispie. Texas Tech ended up pulling out the game, 41-34, in overtime.

Plenette Pierson scored 22 points as No. 8 Texas Tech rallied late to defeat No. 7 Kansas State, 71-65, on Thursday in the semifinals of the Big 12 Conference tournament at Dallas. Texas Tech (25-4) trailed for most of the game, but started to come back after Kansas State center Nicole Ohlde picked up her third and fourth fouls in a four-second span. She was taken out of the game with 10:11 left and didn't return until nearly seven minutes later.

Cisti Greenwalt and Erin Grant scored 19 points apiece, and No. 13 Texas Tech took a share of the Big 12 Conference lead with an 89-62 victory Tuesday night over No. 14 Iowa State. The win, tempered by an injury to Greenwalt, put the Lady Raiders, 17-4 overall and 8-2 in the Big 12, in a three-way tie with Iowa State (18-3, 8-2) and Kansas State. Greenwalt, averaging 13.6 points, left the game with about five minutes left when she injured her left leg while playing defense.

What a Royal and rollicking way to start a football game. Texas paid homage to former football coach Darrell Royal on Saturday, lining up in the formation he introduced - the wishbone - even though it was operating from its own six-yard line on its first play from scrimmage against Iowa State. Royal, who died Wednesday at 88, was credited for bringing the wishbone to major college football in 1968, though it was largely developed - which Royal acknowledged - by Longhorns assistant Emory Bellard.

Don't get attached to these standings because they're going to be different next week after Notre Dame beats Oklahoma, Georgia upsets Florida, Texas Tech shocks Kansas State, USC loses at Arizona, Oregon State stumbles at Utah and Mississippi State stuns Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Wait, no, actually, reverse all those outcomes. Still, you can expect next week's standings to "shake, prattle and stroll," to borrow from that 1950s song by "Bill Snyder and the Wildcats. " This week's only significant move was No. 9 South Carolina dropping five spots to No. 14. We settled that by promoting each of the next five teams one spot (Zzzzz)

Five things to watch this week in college football. 1. Rise and shine. It's always better when Texas playing Oklahoma in the annual Texas State Fair game at the Cotton Bowl is a top-five matchup with national-title implications. We'll have to settle this year for two one-loss ranked teams trying to keep faint hopes alive. 2. Only a few hours ago West Virginia at Texas Tech would have been the nation's No.1 offense going against the top-ranked defense. But Texas Tech messed up everything by falling to No. 2 after allowing 41 points in its loss to Oklahoma.

Kasib Powell scored 21 points, and No. 25 Texas Tech held Houston to 28% shooting in a 62-48 victory Wednesday at Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech (9-1) never trailed against Houston (2-7), which made only 17 of 61 shots. Coach Bob Knight earned his 796th college victory. The Red Raiders led by as many as 28 points early in the second half. But Houston went on a 18-4 run that whittled Tech's lead to 12 with less than a minute left.

Texas Tech men's basketball Coach Billy Gillispie has resigned because of health concerns, the school said Thursday, ending a bizarre and disappointing one-year run at the program he took over with designs on building a West Texas powerhouse. The school and fans had hoped the 52-year-old Gillispie could orchestrate another remarkable turnaround like the ones he put together at Texas El Paso and Texas A&M. Instead, after being out of coaching for two years, he led the Red Raiders to an 8-23 record last season that included just one Big 12 victory.
