Early generations saw Gloria Swanson and Buster Keaton transformed into bridge-playing ghouls, Bette Davis transformed into Baby Jane, Joan Crawford transformed into Joan Crawford. Once a beloved star hits unlovable middle age, the thinking goes, audiences love to hate them.

Meryl Streep will again walk the red carpet this month at the Academy Awards as a nominee for best actress. But this time will be different from the other 13 times she's been nominated for an Oscar: She's representing "The Devil Wears Prada," a film full of style, glamour and super-chic clothes. Streep's own style, however, is usually somewhat lower key than that of imperious fashion editor Miranda Priestley, whom Streep portrayed in the film. "Meryl is the total opposite of the role she played.

But opening night at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival kicked off Thursday with a gala premiere for the Fox dramedy "The Devil Wears Prada" in Westwood Village.

THE devil wears Prada, Donna Karan and Bill Blass, and her second assistant wears Chanel, Calvin Klein, Moschino and ... a toe ring? In a film full of serious fashion, the camera lingers on Andy's toe ring on the rumpled sheets, the morning after a Paris fling. Was the shot meant to imply that her transformation from bohemian to label whore was never complete? Who knows? One thing's for sure, though, no fashion magazine assistant or editor would don a toe ring. Ever.

"To be honest, we were struggling to find a trailer we thought did justice to the movie," said Pamela Levine, the studio's co-president of marketing.
