"Syriana," a political thriller starring George Clooney, and "The New World," about a 17th century English explorer, are the two U.S. films that will be featured at the 56th annual Berlin International Film Festival in February. They were among the nine films for the event unveiled Tuesday. The rest of the 26-movie lineup will be announced in mid-January, festival director Dieter Kosslick said. The U.S. films will be shown out of competition.

"THE New World," Terrence Malick's sweeping interpretation of the Pocahontas/John Smith story, will raise the curtain on the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Jan. 5. The famously private Malick isn't expected to attend, but Q'orianka Kilcher, who plays the Native American princess, will be there. It's not clear whether she will be joined by Colin Farrell, who plays Smith. He checked into rehab recently.
