San Diego Repertory Theatre will present the musical "Trafford Tanzi," Claire Luckham's literal battle between the sexes in a wrestling ring, "A Christmas Carol" and "Hamlet" as part of its six-play 1994-95 season at the Lyceum Stage and Space in San Diego's Horton Plaza. The company's artistic director, Douglas Jacobs, will direct "Trafford Tanzi" in the 250-seat Lyceum Space, which will be converted to a theater in the round to accommodate the fight.

For most theaters today, it's a recessionary time--a time for pulling back. Gay and lesbian theaters in San Diego are just beginning to blossom and grow, however. And, for the city's three such theaters--Diversionary Theatre, Fresh Dish Productions and Labrys Productions--their determination to speak out has been fed by the renewed adversity that the gay and lesbian community perceives from the straight world.
