A mistrial was declared Monday in the federal court trial of a former Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant accused of using stolen drug money to help build his San Dimas home. Jurors in the trial of Thomas Gordon said they were hopelessly deadlocked after nearly two weeks of deliberations. U.S. District Judge William J. Rea declared the mistrial in the latest case stemming from a corruption probe known as Operation Big Spender.

A retired sheriff's sergeant, Thomas Gordon, has become the 16th member or former member of the Sheriff's Department to be convicted in connection with a drug money-skimming scandal involving deputies on drug enforcement teams. After a three-week trial, Gordon was found guilty of filing a false income tax return, but the federal jury was hung on a count of laundering money. He could receive a maximum three-year jail term.

Two days after a city commissioner was removed from his post, two other commissioners who had been criticized for comments on an Internet blog are resigning. Art Pedroza and Luis Rodriguez, both members of the Housing and Redevelopment Commission, gave notice Wednesday. The other commissioner, Thomas Gordon, was removed by the City Council on Monday. The three have been contributors to orangejuiceblog .com, which has been critical of city government.

A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Monday to federal theft and money-laundering charges, admitting that he helped steal about $800,000 during a 1988 drug raid. Stephen Nichols, 41, of La Habra Heights also pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to violating the civil rights of a drug trafficker caught in the drug raid when he lied to a judge about the circumstances of the case.

Ventura resident Thomas Gordon FitzGerald, a former Tupperware distributor, died Wednesday in Ventura. He was 76. FitzGerald was born April 10, 1921, in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1924. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1940 and attended Los Angeles City College before serving in World War II, where he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars.
