Thomas Gordon, a clinical psychologist who developed a system to train parents, teachers and businessmen in no-lose conflict resolution to improve relationships in families, schools and the workplace, has died. He was 84. Gordon, founder of Gordon Training International, which has tutored more than 1 million people in 40 nations, died Monday in the San Diego County town of Solana Beach from prostate cancer. A Santa Ana commissioner who had been asked to resign his appointed post earlier this year because of his critical writings on the Internet has been removed from the city's anti-gang commission. The City Council took the action Monday night but offered no public explanation. Thomas Gordon is one of three city commissioners who were asked to resign earlier this year because of their contributions to an Internet blog that is frequently critical of the city's government and leadership.

A mistrial was declared Monday in the federal court trial of a former Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant accused of using stolen drug money to help build his San Dimas home. Jurors in the trial of Thomas Gordon said they were hopelessly deadlocked after nearly two weeks of deliberations. U.S. District Judge William J. Rea declared the mistrial in the latest case stemming from a corruption probe known as Operation Big Spender.

A retired sheriff's sergeant, Thomas Gordon, has become the 16th member or former member of the Sheriff's Department to be convicted in connection with a drug money-skimming scandal involving deputies on drug enforcement teams. After a three-week trial, Gordon was found guilty of filing a false income tax return, but the federal jury was hung on a count of laundering money. He could receive a maximum three-year jail term.

A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Monday to federal theft and money-laundering charges, admitting that he helped steal about $800,000 during a 1988 drug raid. Stephen Nichols, 41, of La Habra Heights also pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to violating the civil rights of a drug trafficker caught in the drug raid when he lied to a judge about the circumstances of the case.

Ventura resident Thomas Gordon FitzGerald, a former Tupperware distributor, died Wednesday in Ventura. He was 76. FitzGerald was born April 10, 1921, in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1924. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1940 and attended Los Angeles City College before serving in World War II, where he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars.

Pitch canker disease, which has plagued coastal Monterey pines for nearly 20 years, has been found in the Sierra Nevada. It has so far been detected in a single spot, an orchard in the Eldorado National Forest east of Sacramento, and the Sierra environs are not as hospitable to the fungal disease as the coast. But if it becomes established in the range, pitch canker could threaten some of the most prevalent species, such as ponderosa pine.

Wall Street is starting to believe Yahoo Inc. is no longer a bargain. The Internet company's stock, which recently surged to a two-year high, dropped 5% Tuesday as some analysts concluded shares are priced about right. Yahoo closed down $1.23 a share to $22.79 on Nasdaq. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company declined to comment. Salomon Smith Barney's Lanny Baker revised his rating down to "in line" from "outperform" after Yahoo briefly exceeded his $24 target last week.
