"The Row" had a hangover Wednesday. For the uninitiated, "The Row" is a stretch of 28th Street between Figueroa and Hoover streets where USC's fraternities and sororities are concentrated. On Tuesday night and into the early hours Wednesday, The Row threw another memorable beer blast as students celebrated a rite of fall, the return to classes. Beer bottles, some smashed, others half-filled, were everywhere--in gutters, on lawns, rolling around on sidewalks.

The Thrifty Jr. drugstore chain, reacting to protests from residents and an arson fire last month, abandoned plans to open a new store in San Francisco's contentious Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, the company announced. Thrifty said in a statement that "recent events raise serious concerns over the ultimate safety of the neighborhood." An arson blaze swept through the construction site on Sept. 22, destroying it and nearby buildings, leaving 60 apartment dwellers homeless.

In its efforts to prevent the proliferation of liquor stores in Santa Monica, the city will oppose a beer-and-wine license application by the new owner of a drug store at 1228 Santa Monica Mall. Thrifty Jr. Inc., a subsidiary of Thrifty Drug, is seeking the license for the store the company acquired from Drug King.
