"This is a ridiculous time for me--frankly I'm spread a bit thin right now," admits director Michael Apted as he races against the clock to complete the final sound mixes on "Thunderheart," the last of three films he will have in release over the next two months. "I wish these films could be spread out a bit more--people are gonna get tired of me."

The 17 years Laguna Niguel author Evan Maxwell spent meeting deadlines as a newspaper reporter paid off for his and wife Ann's latest writing assignment: the novelization of "Thunderheart," TriStar's new crime-thriller starring Val Kilmer and Sam Shepard. Maxwell wrote the first draft of the novel based on John Fusco's screenplay in 15 days. "We had a total of 21 days to turn in the book," he said.

When Kevin Costner was filming "Dances With Wolves" in South Dakota last year, Loretta Cook, a Lakota Sioux American Indian, had never heard of the actor. A friend who worked on the movie as an extra dropped by and showed her a photograph of herself and Costner. "Oh, nice," Cook responded. "Who is he? Your boyfriend?" Today, one would be hard-pressed to find anyone in South Dakota who doesn't know who Costner is. His film about the life of a U.S.
