The money would have been nice. Nate Guertler won't lie. After four years of paying for the privilege of playing football at USC, an actual scholarship would have made things easier. Teammates wouldn't have to sneak him food from the athletic dining hall. He wouldn't have to stay up late after practice figuring out how to pay overdue rent. He wouldn't have to summon all the courage in his aching body to call family and friends to borrow $5,000 in overdue tuition, as he did recently.

USC tight end Chris Willson described it as a “surreal” experience. Willson, a fourth-year junior who played at Santa Fe Springs St. Paul High, transferred to USC this season from Wake Forest, where he played baseball and quarterback during spring practice. But with all of USC's scholarship tight ends sidelined because of injuries, the 6-foot-6, 245-pound Willson stepped in and caught a pass during the Trojans' 19-3 victory over Utah. “Every week, they tell us to get ready as if we're starting,” said Willson, who had previously played for the Trojans only on a few field-goal attempts.

During his days at Anaheim Servite, lots of people predicted big things for tight end Troy Niklas. He's accomplishing plenty at Notre Dame, but even more important, he's showing lessons learned at Servite haven't been forgotten. He helped raise funds for a homeless shelter earlier this week. Here's a story link on the impact Niklas is making. Eric.sondheimer@latimes.com

It was fitting that on Tuesday, the same day the NCAA announced comparatively mild sanctions against Miami, the full breadth of penalties imposed on USC revealed itself on the practice field. The Trojans continued preparations for Saturday's game against Utah with no scholarship tight ends, only two hobbled scholarship receivers, nearly no reserve offensive linemen and a defense also becoming increasingly depleted by injuries. Starting linebacker Lamar Dawson suffered an apparent knee injury during the workout and needed assistance to leave the facility.

USC lost more than a game against Notre Dame. Tight ends Xavier Grimble and Randall Telfer and running back Justin Davis suffered injuries that will sideline them for the Trojans' next game against Utah, interim Coach Ed Orgeron said Sunday. USC will face the Utes with only one scholarship tight end, sophomore Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick , and with a tailback corps devoid of its two leading rushers. Tre Madden , who started the first six games, sat out against Notre Dame because of a hamstring injury.

As an undrafted rookie, Joseph Fauria had to beat considerable odds to make the Detroit Lions roster. The former UCLA tight end had to take advantage of any opportunities, constantly be improving, and, of course, be ultra-prepared. Surely, the Lions will forgive him for not being entirely prepared last Sunday. Fauria ran out of touchdown dances. How could he have known he'd had to come up with three of them? That's right, the 6-foot-7 Fauria was targeted three times, and reeled in each pass for a touchdown in a 31-17 victory over Cleveland.

When opposing teams learn that the tight end for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is 5-foot-9, 180-pound Cameron Page, they must snicker a little bit. How can someone that small be counted out to block a 6-3 defensive ends? But once the game begins, it's Page having the last laugh in taking his target out of the play. "He's a pretty amazing guy," Coach Kevin Rooney said. "He blocks the heck out of people. " Notre Dame is 5-2 overall and now must be considered the favorite to win the Serra League after its victory over Bishop Amat on Friday.

USC offensive coordinator Clay Helton will call plays for the Trojans for the first time Thursday night against Arizona. Tight end Xavier Grimble can't wait. Interim Coach Ed Orgeron has said he wants Helton to spread the ball around more. And with USC's receiver corps thinned by injuries, that should create opportunities for Grimble and fellow tight ends Randall Telfer and Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick. "I'm ready to go out there and showcase my skills," said Grimble, who has 10 receptions, one for a touchdown.

Who's having the best NFL start among the undrafted rookies? Former Crespi tight end Joseph Fauria is certainly in the running. He has caught a touchdown pass in each of his two games for the Detroit Lions. And he has finished the touchdown with the typical Fauria enthusiasm _ with a dance . His latest on Sunday against the Washington Redskins brought back memories from the band, 'N Sync. Everyone would have seen Fauria's dancing abilities during his playing days at UCLA if dancing after a touchdown were legal.
