Former Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable has filed a grievance to recover $120,000 that the team fined him during the final year of his contract. A person familiar with the fines spoke to the Associated Press on Sunday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. The story was first reported by ESPN. The person did not say why the Raiders withheld the money from Cable's paychecks. ESPN reported owner Al Davis was upset that the Raiders lost two days of organized team activities in June for violating NFL rules.

The Oakland Raiders enter their bye week in similar fashion to the way they started the season: coming off a close loss to the San Diego Chargers and with more allegations being thrown at Coach Tom Cable . What happened between a 24-20 season-opening loss to San Diego and Sunday's 24-16 defeat has been more dysfunction around the NFL's worst team over the last seven seasons. The Raiders (2-6) have lost four games by at least 20 points, have taken dramatic steps back offensively and have been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

In the end, the Throw-Down in Motown didn't amount to much. The NFL decided Monday not to fine San Francisco Coach Jim Harbaugh or Detroit Coach Jim Schwartz for their postgame dust-up at Ford Field, when a hard handshake and backslap by Harbaugh led to a heated exchange that required the coaches be separated. The incident happened after the 49ers handed the Lions their first loss, 25-19, and led to a brief standoff between the teams before they headed up the tunnel to their locker rooms.

Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable declined to comment Monday about reports he punched defensive assistant Randy Hanson in the jaw and caused injuries that required treatment at a hospital this month. According to AOL Fanhouse, Cable hit Hanson on Aug. 5 for unknown reasons. A report filed with the Napa (Calif.) Police Department describes an unnamed 41-year-old assistant coach being treated at the Queen of the Valley Hospital for a jaw injury, which the victim alleges was caused by an unidentified member of the Raiders' coaching staff.

New UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell has asked Idaho Coach Tom Cable to come to Westwood as offensive coordinator and line coach. Cable, who is 8-26 in three seasons with the Vandals, told the Idaho Statesman that Dorrell made the offer Dec. 18, the day he was hired to replace Bob Toledo. "If it's going to happen, it's just a matter of me saying I'm in," Cable said. "As of right now, I'm still at Idaho."

The strangest scene in the NFL this season really wasn't that unfamiliar. Al Davis sitting in the courtroom Tuesday, presenting his case about how he and his Oakland Raiders were wronged. But it wasn't a courtroom at all, it was Raiders headquarters. And the jury was a roomful of reporters covering the firing of coach Lane Kiffin, the owner's fourth such dismissal since 2003 as his team has scraped along the sea floor, compiling an NFL-worst record of 20-64.

The best word to describe UCLA's offensive attack last season is ... weak. The Bruins averaged 294.9 yards of total offense, which ranked 110th out of 117 Division I teams. Their running game was 114th at 2.6 yards a carry. Taking most of the blame for UCLA's offensive woes was a line that started 10 different players. Enter Tom Cable, UCLA's new offensive coordinator and line coach, who was hired after being the head coach at the University of Idaho the previous four seasons.

One is especially secretive. Another surprisingly candid. A third has turned back time (and turned down boom boxes), and a fourth has daily meetings with an irascible football legend nobody else ever sees. They are the NFL's new head coaches — six in all — and each is faced with the monumental challenge of reversing the fortunes of a down-on-its-luck franchise. Only one of them has been a head coach in the league before (Denver's John Fox), and one takes over a team that was .500 last year (Oakland's Hue Jackson)

The Oakland Raiders informed Coach Tom Cable on Tuesday that they will not bring him back as coach next season even though he led them to their best record in eight years this season. The Raiders announced their decision not to exercise a two-year, $5-million option on Cable's contract for 2011 and 2012, two days after wrapping up an 8-8 season that gave Oakland its first non-losing record since winning the 2002 AFC championship. "Coach Cable was informed the club would not be exercising its option for the 2011 season, and that he's free to seek employment elsewhere," his agent, Don Yee, said in an e-mail to the Associated Press.

The Philadelphia 76ers fired coach Eddie Jordan after one season Thursday. Team president and general manager Ed Stefanski announced the move, saying the Sixers took an "unacceptable" step backward after two straight seasons in the playoffs. Jordan is finished after a woefully underachieving season that had the Sixers near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Jordan was hired last summer and sold his Princeton offense as the way to turn them into contenders. Instead, players were unhappy with his system almost from the start and the Sixers struggled to put together any kind of winning streaks.

Oakland Raiders Coach Tom Cable will not be punished by the NFL after an investigation into allegations of domestic violence against women and a fight with an assistant coach. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that Cable's role in the training camp altercation with assistant Randy Hanson warranted an evaluation under the league's personal conduct policy. Cable was accused of breaking Hanson's jaw and teeth during a fight at the team's training camp hotel in August.

For offensive coordinator Tom Cable, Saturday's game at Washington State will be somewhat of a homecoming. Cable never played for or coached the Cougars, but he was a standout lineman at the University of Idaho in the mid-1980s and spent six years coaching the Vandals, including four seasons as head coach from 2000 to 2003. "Going back up there will be special because it's a great place in terms of the community of Moscow," said Cable, a native of Snohomish, Wash.
