Actor Tom Cruise is mourning Tony Scott, the "Top Gun" director who jumped to his death Sunday in the L.A. area. Scott helped Cruise deliver one of the most popular performances of the actor's career, as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the '80s fighter-jet romp.  "Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him. He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable," Cruise said in a statement to the Ministry. "My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have seen considerably less attention paid to their abrupt split, thanks to the recent flurry of activity surrounding Kristen Stewart - but that's not to say Holmes isn't still sought after. The "Dawson's Creek" actress made headlines last week simply by turning down an invitation to the annual gala for the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a dance scholarship program for which she serves as board member.  The event, co-chaired by director Adam Shankman and "So You Think You Can Dance" producer Nigel Lythgoe, forged on without her, though the men explained Katie's decision to sit it out. "We just got off the phone with Katie, and she let us know that she won't make it tonight," the two said to the crowd at the top of the evening.  PHOTOS: Celebrity splits of 2012 "While she is very upset and disappointed that she is not here, we all agree that her attendance would make her the spotlight of the evening and it would distract from what tonight is all about: dance and the arts.” Fair enough.

Katie Holmes couldn't tell a lie, but she definitely tap danced around the truth in an interview conducted the day before she filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. In hindsight, her soon-to-be-blindsided spouse's name was remarkably absent from a sit-down she had with California style magazine C on a Wednesday in June, according to Kelsey McKinnon, the senior editor who talked to Holmes. "Going back over the tapes, there were signs," McKinnon said (via the New York Post ). "Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple of cards on the table but never showing her whole hand.

What move befits an actress looking to make a fresh start after a high-profile divorce? If you're Katie Holmes, you turn to the comforting, high-wattage embrace of Broadway. After a month that found Holmes joining Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman among the ranks of ex-wives to movie star Tom Cruise, the actress has signed on to star in Theresa Rebeck's new comedy, "Dead Accounts," which will premiere at Broadway's Music Box Theatre this fall. Holmes made her Broadway debut in 2008 in a production of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons," which resulted in mixed reviews including Ben Brantley in the New York Times, who wasn't exceptionally complimentary of the actress' peformance but seemed most disappointed in the play's director.

The tabloids tell us that Scientology was at the root of the breakup between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. If the "sources" fueling the entertainment media's frenzied coverage of the divorce are correct, Holmes realized Suri was reaching an age where her religious instruction would begin in earnest, and could not bear it. Neither Cruise nor Holmes nor their representatives are confirming any of this. Regardless, the rumors and related coverage raise the question: What is Scientology?

For Tom Cruise, a quick resolution to his divorce from Katie Holmes looked like "Mission: Impossible" just last week. But the Hollywood action hero appears to have extinguished the tabloid firestorm with an agreement that one source said grants Holmes primary custody of their daughter, Suri, and control of her religious upbringing. The confidential deal was hammered out over the weekend in New York and announced Monday, 11 days after Holmes took the industry and her husband by surprise with the filing of divorce papers in Manhattan.

Forget what you might have heard at that Fourth of July barbecue: Katie Holmes wants to keep her divorce from Tom Cruise as private as possible and has not filed for an emergency custody hearing, her attorney said Thursday. "The reports about an emergent filing last Friday are incorrect. Other than her action for divorce, the only pending application filed by Ms. Holmes remains her request for an anonymous caption,” attorney Jonathan Wolfe told L.A. Now. Cruise has yet to file any papers, TMZ reported , citing sources who said the actor was likely to file custodial papers in New York first, while requesting that the case be moved to California, largely seen as the couple's primary state of residence.

"I have nothing to lose," Tom Cruise says. He's not talking about his pending divorce from Katie Holmes, his wife of more than five years. Instead, the "Mission: Impossible" star utters that phrase — along with "I am not a hero" — in the trailer released Tuesday for "Jack Reacher," Cruise's next film. The Paramount Pictures action movie, due in theaters Dec. 21, is adapted from Lee Child's novel "One Shot" and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "The Usual Suspects.

After the coffee. Before figuring out my July 4th plans. The Skinny: In light of Anderson Cooper's revelation Monday I just wanted to tell my readers that I have two cats. I hope we can put this whole issue of whether I'm a cat person or dog person behind us. Tuesday's headlines include a profile of Dalian Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin, a look at Tom Cruise's latest career crisis and how the networks are talking dirtier without actually talking dirty. Have a great July 4th. The Morning Fix will return on Thursday.
