Cochran Jr. and Los Angeles Police Detective Tom Lange, battled in a confrontation so focused on detail that the big picture in the O.J. Simpson murder trial was occasionally obscured. It took five hours, but the feds found what they were looking for--a small white ball of what they said appeared to be methamphetamine. The FBI agents and Los Angeles police let Eddie Nash change out of his pajamas, then led him from his condominium here in handcuffs as TV cameras rolled. Authorities had long considered Nash the one who got away--a convicted drug dealer who was acquitted of murder charges in the notorious bludgeoning deaths of four people in a Laurel Canyon drug den.

John C. Holmes, the world's premier pornographic film star, sobbed as he sat in a steaming bathtub early one morning in July, 1981. Haltingly, Holmes confessed to his wife that he had played a central role in four brutal murders earlier that month in a drug dealers' hillside home in Laurel Canyon. Philip Vannatter, the Los Angeles police detective who led the investigation of the 1994 slayings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, has died. Vannatter died of complications from cancer Friday in Santa Clarita, his wife, Rita, said. He was 70. "He was a real blue-collar detective," O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden said in an emotional interview Sunday. "He did his job the best he could and he was a fine detective, one of the best. " Vannatter was among the first detectives to arrive at former football star Simpson's mansion in June 1994 after the stabbing deaths of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole, and her friend, Goldman.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson will host the 1996 Independent Spirit Awards March 23 on Santa Monica beach. Portions of the show will air on cable's Bravo channel on March 25 during commercial breaks from ABC's Oscar telecast. Jackson won last year's Independent Spirit Award for best actor for "Pulp Fiction." . . . Los Angeles police Monday were investigating the drive-by slaying of a San Pedro man who was gunned down while celebrating his 21st birthday. Luis Navarro was killed by a single shot fired from a car just before 1 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Gaffey and Sepulveda streets in San Pedro, Detective Tom Lange said. The victim, who authorities say was not a gang member, was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center shortly after the shooting.

A 23-year-old suspected gang member from Long Beach pleaded not guilty this week in the drive-by slaying of a San Pedro man who was gunned down while celebrating his 21st birthday, Los Angeles police said. Gerson Melendez was arrested late Friday night at his home, said LAPD Detective Tom Lange. A second gang member is being sought in the Aug. 5 slaying, Lange said. Melendez was arraigned on one murder count filed in the slaying of Luis Navarro, who was shot to death about 1 a.m.
