There has been some unending traction to the name "Tommy Amaker" and the USC basketball head coaching job that is still open and being taken care of by interim head coach Bob Cantu (who must be tired of that word. "Interim. "). Also, according to a person close to the athletic department and another aware of candidates contacted by a search firm being used by USC, Syracuse assistant and former Mater Dei player Mike Hopkins is still in the picture. Since Amaker's name remains floating out there, it might be time to examine his coaching record.

The reaction looked familiar. The desperation shot by Oregon's Darius Wright missed at the buzzer, Seton Hall advanced to the next round of the NCAA tournament and Coach Tommy Amaker thrust his arms over his head, like Joe Montana celebrating a touchdown pass. We've seen it before, when Christian Laettner made the jump shot to beat Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional final. Duke players jumped, ran around or collapsed on the floor.

Mike Krzyzewski still loves telling the story. He gets this look on his face, the kind a proud parent wears at a graduation or a wedding. It is a fitting look because, in many ways, Tommy Amaker is the son Krzyzewski never had. "This was the summer (1981) after my first year at Duke," Krzyzewski begins. "I was at a summer-league game in Washington to watch Johnny Dawkins play. There was a guy in the stands named Reginald Kitchen, a local AAU coach.

USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett's nationwide search for a men's basketball coach took him home Wednesday when he met with Trojan interim Coach Charlie Parker. Although Garrett held negotiations with Duke assistant Tommy Amaker earlier this week, he discussed a possible contract with Parker, sources said. Still, Parker's future with the Trojans remains in question as USC administrators try to find a coach who will take the job for a comparatively small contract.

Brian Ellerbe was rewarded Friday with the Michigan coaching job as Athletic Director Tom Goss removed the word "interim" from his title. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity and to know that we got the job because we worked for it," Ellerbe said. "The development of our team and the season puts a lot of emphasis on where we're going. "We just need to add to it to make sure that we put Michigan basketball in the place in the country where it's supposed to be and that's right at the top."
