A panel of Ventura County mayors Tuesday nominated Ventura Councilman Brian Brennan or Port Hueneme Councilwoman Toni Young to fill a vacancy on the California Coastal Commission. The Mayor's Selection Committee took the unanimous vote at a breakfast meeting in Camarillo. The nominations go to the governor, who will appoint the new commissioner, representing Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider a recommendation by Supervisor Frank Schilloto nominate Supervisor Judy Mikels to fill a vacancy on the California Coastal Commission. Schillo said Friday that Mikels has a strong background in planning, a key function of the state panel. "Judy has some particularly important talents for the Coastal Commission," Schillo said. Mikels, whose 4th District stretches from Simi Valley to Las Posas Valley, is in her second term.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously tapped chairwoman Judy Mikels as its nominee for the California Coastal Commission. Mikels joins Ventura Councilman Brian Brennan and Port Hueneme Councilwoman Toni Young as county nominees to the Coastal Commission, the 12-member body that addresses beach and ocean issues up and down the state.

Officials for a bus agency that serves riders in western Ventura County on Wednesday discussed their goals and priorities for the incoming general manager who will take over in February. Board members from the five areas South Coast Area Transit serves--Ojai, Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme and unincorporated areas--told a consulting firm that a high priority is to make the bus system more user-friendly.

Rosalind McGrath, the only Democrat in the race to replace state Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard), said Monday she will remain a candidate despite being awarded a fellowship to study in England. "I'm staying in the race; that's all I have to say right now," McGrath said in a brief interview, declining to elaborate.

The Port Hueneme City Council on Monday approved a plan to rehabilitate a low-income apartment complex, while opening the door to increased federal rent subsidies for residents in the project. The council's 3-0 vote, with council members Toni Young and Ken Hess absent from the special meeting, allows the complex's owner to begin refurbishing the 41-unit apartment complex at 680 Evergreen Lane.

After six years of acrimonious debate, the Port Hueneme City Council agreed Wednesday to build a controversial 134-space recreational vehicle park on a city-owned beach. However, the council's decision may be overturned when a new council is seated next month, officials said.

The teachers' union of the Hueneme Elementary School District has endorsed three of the nine candidates running for board seats in the November election. The Hueneme Education Assn. endorsed incumbent Elaine K. Garber and challengers Gail Suval and Bob Edwards for the three open seats. The decision, based on a unanimous vote of faculty members representing the district's 11 schools, was the first endorsement in the union's history, President Donna Branstrom said.

"Currently, a meandering three-foot sea wall is under construction at Hueneme Beach," reads the press release from City Manager Robert L. Hunt. Folks, there is no way to miss this ill-conceived project. Just drive west on Ventura Road and turn right. Aesthetics? Forget it. The ocean view? Where is it? Emergency crews can't access the beach. Police in cars cannot see over the wall. Graffiti covers it weekly.
