Reporting from New York -- They stood so close there was barely room to breathe, their cellphone cameras raised and at the ready. Hundreds of New York Giants fans crammed into a Times Square sporting goods store last week, some waiting for three hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of the city's newest Super Bowl-bound sensation. Some fans wore crisp Victor Cruz jerseys, while others sported newly minted T-shirts reading "Cruuuuuuuz" on the front - the Giants cheer that sounds like booing - with a diagram of salsa steps on the back, the star receiver's touchdown celebration of choice.

Reporting from New Orleans -- Alabama did something Monday night even the best NFL teams don't do much anymore. The Crimson Tide played defense -- what a boring, antiquated, yesteryear concept. No. 2 Alabama pitched the first shutout in Bowl Championship Series title-game history with a 21-0 win over No. 1 Louisiana State at the Superdome. It also was the first shutout in the 14-year history of BCS bowl games. It was the second BCS title for Alabama, which won in 2009, and its 14th national title overall.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Too much polish, too much poise and too much defensive pressure was way too much for the Atlanta Falcons to overcome Sunday, and the New York Giants broke open a tight contest in the second half on their way to a 24-2 playoff victory at MetLife Stadium. In earning their first postseason win since Super Bowl XLII nearly four years ago and their first at this venue, the Giants earned a trip to Green Bay and will face the Packers in a divisional-round game Sunday.

Reporting from New Orleans -- Haven't San Diego Chargers fans suffered enough? No, there was more pain to be had, right there on their TVs Saturday night from the Superdome. While their team was sitting home, eliminated from the playoffs again, there was little Darren Sproles, once one of theirs, once among their pride and joy, once the Chargers' choice as a franchise player, picking up his new team and helping carry it to a second-round NFL playoff game. Sproles is 5 feet 6, is listed as weighing 190 pounds -- probably with sandbags in each pocket.

Lavasier Tuinei had been Oregon's Mr. Anonymous on a team with several more highly publicized players, but that changed in the Ducks' 45-38 victory over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Monday. Tuinei established career highs with eight catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns and was chosen offensive player of the game. "I really don't care about the fame, having all eyes on me and all that," Tuinei said. "I just go out there and help the team win. " To underscore that point, Tuinei said his favorite play in the game was a block he threw downfield to help spring De'Anthony Thomas on a 64-yard touchdown run. "That's L.T.," quarterback Darron Thomas said.

He was standing still, a brilliant Pasadena sun glittering off his silver helmet, a powerful Crenshaw legacy embedded in his darkened jersey. And then, just like that, he was gone. Last winter, De'Anthony Thomas was a prized USC running back recruit before suddenly and stunningly sprinting into the wilds of Oregon. On his first official football visit home Monday, he disappeared again, twice, more jaws dropping, more heads shaking, the kid who got away running away with a Rose Bowl record in a 45-38 victory over Wisconsin.
