PALM BEACH, Fla. — NFL owners on Wednesday voted to expand the playoff overtime rules to the regular season, increasing the likelihood that both teams will get to touch the ball in the extra period. The rule means that if a team scores a field goal on the first possession of overtime, the opposing team will get a possession. A touchdown on the first overtime possession will still result in sudden-death victory. That was one of five rule proposals that passed on the final day of the annual league meetings at the Breakers hotel.

As if Los Angeles Loyola High's opponents didn't have enough to worry about trying to stop high-powered running back Anthony Barr, they now have another reason to fret. His name is Jared Baker, and he helped the Cubs hold off Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 28-18, on Friday night at Los Angeles Valley College in the opener for each team. A speedy 5-foot-9, 181-pound junior, Baker rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown in only nine carries in his varsity debut. The punishing Barr had 125 yards and two touchdowns in 30 carries in addition to an interception he returned 87 yards for a touchdown.

Reporting from Indianapolis - His nickname - "Gronk" - makes him sound like a Dr. Seuss character. But the New York Giants use other words to describe Rob Gronkowski, the 6-foot-6, 265-pound tight end for the New England Patriots, a guy who vacuums any pass thrown in his general vicinity. Giants safety Kenny Phillips calls him "definitely a new kind of monster. " Giants tight end Jake Ballard marvels that Gronkowski "is a mismatch everywhere on the field. " And Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell - drawing up strategies this week for Super Bowl XLVI against the Patriots - sees Gronkowski as another major weapon for quarterback Tom Brady in a pass-catching arsenal that also includes tight end Aaron Hernandez and receivers Wes Welker and Deion Branch.

James, the NFL's active rushing leader, signed with Seattle on Tuesday but spent the game in sweats, pen and notepad in hand. Hasselbeck put on a good show for his new teammate, leading the Seahawks on scoring drives to end the first half and open the second.

. -- To Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, taking criticism is part of the job. So is disproving it. Masoli answered his naysayers by throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns in Oregon's 42-3 upset of sixth-ranked California on Saturday in their Pacific 10 Conference opener. He completed 21 of 25 passes for the Ducks (3-1, 1-0), who had 524 yards in total offense and buried any resemblance to the Oregon team that fell so dramatically to Boise State in a nationally televised season opener.

Alex Bridgford did not need to have his best game Friday to beat a mistake-prone Long Beach Poly. The Mission Viejo quarterback had two touchdown passes but also threw three interceptions as the host Diablos (3-1), ranked No. 3 by The Times, held on to beat the No. 8 Jackrabbits (3-1), 17-12, in a Pac-5 Division showdown. Reporting from New York -- They stood so close there was barely room to breathe, their cellphone cameras raised and at the ready. Hundreds of New York Giants fans crammed into a Times Square sporting goods store last week, some waiting for three hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of the city's newest Super Bowl-bound sensation. Some fans wore crisp Victor Cruz jerseys, while others sported newly minted T-shirts reading "Cruuuuuuuz" on the front - the Giants cheer that sounds like booing - with a diagram of salsa steps on the back, the star receiver's touchdown celebration of choice.

Reporting from New Orleans -- Alabama did something Monday night even the best NFL teams don't do much anymore. The Crimson Tide played defense -- what a boring, antiquated, yesteryear concept. No. 2 Alabama pitched the first shutout in Bowl Championship Series title-game history with a 21-0 win over No. 1 Louisiana State at the Superdome. It also was the first shutout in the 14-year history of BCS bowl games. It was the second BCS title for Alabama, which won in 2009, and its 14th national title overall.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Too much polish, too much poise and too much defensive pressure was way too much for the Atlanta Falcons to overcome Sunday, and the New York Giants broke open a tight contest in the second half on their way to a 24-2 playoff victory at MetLife Stadium. In earning their first postseason win since Super Bowl XLII nearly four years ago and their first at this venue, the Giants earned a trip to Green Bay and will face the Packers in a divisional-round game Sunday.

Reporting from New Orleans -- Haven't San Diego Chargers fans suffered enough? No, there was more pain to be had, right there on their TVs Saturday night from the Superdome. While their team was sitting home, eliminated from the playoffs again, there was little Darren Sproles, once one of theirs, once among their pride and joy, once the Chargers' choice as a franchise player, picking up his new team and helping carry it to a second-round NFL playoff game. Sproles is 5 feet 6, is listed as weighing 190 pounds -- probably with sandbags in each pocket.

Lavasier Tuinei had been Oregon's Mr. Anonymous on a team with several more highly publicized players, but that changed in the Ducks' 45-38 victory over Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Monday. Tuinei established career highs with eight catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns and was chosen offensive player of the game. "I really don't care about the fame, having all eyes on me and all that," Tuinei said. "I just go out there and help the team win. " To underscore that point, Tuinei said his favorite play in the game was a block he threw downfield to help spring De'Anthony Thomas on a 64-yard touchdown run. "That's L.T.," quarterback Darron Thomas said.

He was standing still, a brilliant Pasadena sun glittering off his silver helmet, a powerful Crenshaw legacy embedded in his darkened jersey. And then, just like that, he was gone. Last winter, De'Anthony Thomas was a prized USC running back recruit before suddenly and stunningly sprinting into the wilds of Oregon. On his first official football visit home Monday, he disappeared again, twice, more jaws dropping, more heads shaking, the kid who got away running away with a Rose Bowl record in a 45-38 victory over Wisconsin.

On his biggest stage yet, Gardena Serra receiver Robert Woods showed on Saturday afternoon in the CIF state championship Division III bowl game why so many people believe he's destined for greatness in football. Juking and sprinting his way to eight catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns, Woods made his final high school game another to add to his bulging scrapbook in helping Serra defeat Kentfield Marin Catholic, 24-20, at the Home Depot Center in Carson. "He can do whatever he wants whenever he wants," said quarterback Conner Preston, who completed 14 of 25 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

Russell Wilson did not believe it. During workouts last summer, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball informed the recently arrived quarterback that he had never caught a touchdown pass for the Badgers. "You've got to be kidding me, right?" said Wilson, who transferred from North Carolina State. Ball wasn't joking. "I was like 'Man, I've gotta get this guy the ball,'" Wilson reflected this week. "He's got to find different ways to get into the end zone. " The quarterback did not waste any time coming through.
