Shortly after being hired about a decade ago to up the ante of musical talent offered at the Orange County Fair's summer concert series in Costa Mesa, veteran talent buyer Ken Phebus rolled out his schedule for the fair's board. But one of the performers on the list was given a thumbs-down. A board member "didn't recognize the name and neither did any of her friends," said Jim Washburn, a writer who covers pop music in Orange County and became friends with Phebus. "It was Norah Jones, and that was right before she took home a boatload of Grammy Awards," Washburn said.

It was unnerving talking to Harriet Nelson about something so private as her overwhelming grief after Ozzie died. You just don't expect it from someone you grew up watching on television, especially the cheery woman who personified American motherhood to a generation. But here we sat on the patio of her home overlooking the beach in South Laguna in 1981, her eyes welling up, as she talked publicly for the first time about the impact of Ozzie's death of cancer six years earlier.

In four to six shows a week since Oct. 11, the Actors' Gang company has been exploring on stage the role of the theater in society. For 20 years, the same company has been experimenting offstage with the role of democracy in the theater. In both cases, the results look mixed at the moment--but difficult to ignore. And in both cases, the results have much to do with Tim Robbins, the company's once-and-again artistic director, principal benefactor and resident movie star.

In other boys' basketball games: Kennedy 53, El Camino Real 51 (OT)--Shahlen Talesh made a layup at the buzzer to lead visiting Kennedy past El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game. El Camino Real trailed by four points at the end of three periods, but went ahead by one early in the fourth.

Dave Ulloa's 70-foot basket at the buzzer gave Hoover High a 57-54 win over Pasadena in a Pacific League basketball game Thursday night at Pasadena. Pasadena had tied the score, 54-54, on a layup with five seconds to play. But Ulloa, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, took the ensuing inbounds pass and lofted a shot that found net at the other end of the court.

As the first winner to accept one of the new, competitive Ovation Awards Mon day night, Marga Gomez ("Carpa Clash") told the 1,250 assembled at the Alex Theatre: "I feel like Janet Gaynor." She was referring to the winner of the first best actress Oscar, presented in 1929. That was before the Oscars were seen worldwide, of course; Gaynor later recalled that the ceremony "was more like a private party." The Ovation ceremony was open to the public, but it too resembled a private party.

So much professional theater takes place in the Los Angeles area that any "best of" list is bound to be unfair, because no one has the time to see even half of what's available. I saw 141 performances this year--all but a handful of them in Los Angeles and Orange counties. That may sound like a lot. But it's not even a quarter of the shows that are offered under Actors' Equity agreements in Southern California during an average year (final figures for 1994 are not in).

Peter Rasmussen scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Faith Baptist (11-6, 2-3).
