Authorities released the name of a man killed in a Thursday car accident that left four others injured. Anthony Robert Roman, 26, of Oxnard was killed when the car he was in crossed the double yellow lines in the 200 block of Harbor Boulevard in Ventura, struck another vehicle and then hit a tree. He and three other men were thrown from the car, Ventura Police Lt. Quinn Fenwick said. The driver of the other car, 26-year-old Marisela Soto of Ventura, was also injured.

There were no fatal traffic accidents in Ventura County over the Memorial Day weekend, although 36 people were arrested for driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officer Jim Utter said the CHP investigated 33 accidents between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Monday. Utter said 24 people were injured, and six of those accidents involved drinking drivers.

Two people were killed Monday in separate traffic accidents in Ventura County, authorities said. A 32-year-old Oxnard man, who was not immediately identified, was killed when the Ford Escort he was riding in was rear-ended by another vehicle about 11:30 a.m., according to Officer Randy Latimer. Three other occupants of the vehicle were transported to area hospitals and treated for various injuries.

Three people were killed in traffic accidents on Ventura County roads in the first 18 hours of the Thanksgiving holiday, authorities said Thursday. On Wednesday evening, a man in his early 20s was killed while riding his bicycle on Pacific Coast Highway south of Channel Islands Boulevard in Oxnard. According to police, the man was traveling north in the southbound lane when he collided head-on with a car driven by Robert Roberts, 46, of Ventura. Roberts was not cited.

A traffic officer who recovered $100,000 in overdue fines, a bystander who foiled a robbery attempt and a volunteer who compiled records on gang members were among those honored by the Ventura Police Department. Cpl. John Turner, 35, was named the department's Officer of the Year in a lunchtime ceremony at Ventura City Hall Thursday. Turner, a 13-year veteran officer, investigates all traffic accidents in Ventura.

Three traffic accidents in Ventura and Moorpark have left one person in critical condition and three others injured, authorities said Thursday. Alcohol was a factor in the two most serious crashes, authorities added. The first accident occurred in Moorpark about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when Steven Barnes, 44, of Moorpark, drove his 1947 Studebaker pickup truck across the center divider on Los Angeles Avenue and struck a car driven by 25-year-old Lisa Mansfield of Moorpark, authorities said.

Three people died in traffic accidents on Ventura County roads last week and during the weekend, one of them a Santa Monica woman whose car was not found until Saturday evening, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday. The fatalities, two of which were allegedly caused by drunken drivers, bring to 57 the number of people killed in traffic accidents in the county this year, said Deputy Coroner Craig L. Stevens. That compares with 41 at the same time last year.

The first rain of the new year heartened farmers Tuesday but triggered numerous accidents including an overturned trash truck on the Ventura Freeway bridge over the Santa Clara River that had cars backed up for miles. The Ventura County Jail booked 24 people on suspicion of drunk driving in 24 hours, and a pregnant Ventura woman crashed her car into a tree while allegedly under the influence of alcohol as the Memorial Day weekend began. Law enforcement officials said they expect the number of arrests and accidents to increase significantly as weekend festivities continue through Monday. They predicted that drunk drivers will be out in force. "It's scary to go out on that road," said Sgt.

A spate of gun violence left one dead and another critically injured in Oxnard over the Labor Day weekend, Ventura County authorities said Tuesday. The latest shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Monday in the courtyard of an Oxnard apartment building when a suspected gang member confronted four people and opened fire on them, Oxnard Police Sgt. Jim Seitz said in a prepared statement. Octavio Lopez, 29, was killed and three others injured in the shooting.
