Construction on Haas Automation Inc.'s 415,000-square-foot building at Rice Avenue and Sturgis Road actually started last week. The company expects to begin relocating all of its operations to the facility, which is set on 76 acres, in December.

A proposal by a Westlake Village motorcycle helmet distributor to move its corporate headquarters to Calabasas will be discussed Thursday by the Calabasas Planning Commission. A public hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 26135 Mureau Road. Helmet House, which also distributes motorcycle apparel, wants to build a 52,452-square-foot facility on a 3.3-acre lot on Malibu Hills Road in the Lost Hills Business Center, city officials said. The building would include warehouse space.

Plans to build a $125-million independent movie and television production facility in the Ventura County city of Moorpark were announced Wednesday by two entertainment industry veterans who hope to cash in on a regional shortage of soundstages. The 37-acre Commonwealth Studios would have 14 soundstages plus offices, a commissary and other support services. It would have a lot with city and residential sets outfitted for rain and fire effects.

A clutch of city officials and film industry promoters gathered on the same lot in east Hollywood where Mary Pickford once worked to celebrate a rare occurrence: the opening of a new soundstage in Los Angeles. Occidental Entertainment Group Holdings, the Hollywood owner of a dozen local soundstages and other entertainment businesses, unveiled a 14,000-square-foot, 54-foot-high soundstage Monday on the historic lot, along with 6,000 square feet of office space and hair, makeup and dressing rooms.
