The U.S. Department of Transportation issued its first fine Friday, against the online ticket agent TripAdvisor, for violating a new airfare advertising rule that took effect in January. The federal agency fined TripAdvisor $80,000 for prominently advertising on its website airfares that did not include taxes and fees. The violations took place from March to June, according to the Department of Transportation. The new regulation requires ticket agents and airlines to display the fares that include taxes and fees more prominently than the base fares.

Question: I recently found a notice on TripAdvisor about the hotel I manage that said TripAdvisor thinks "individuals or entities associated with or having an interest in this property may have interfered with traveler reviews and/or the popularity index for this property." Now I've received an e-mail that says this is a violation of TripAdvisor policy and in some places a violation of federal law. Neither my staff nor I did anything wrong. Now what? S. The other day, when TripAdvisor listed the ten top islands in its new Travelers' Choice poll, I decided I needed to get out more. I'd been to only three. Then I noticed what was missing. So to Hellas (that's Greece) with their list. Since these things are just arbitrary conversation-starters anyway, I'm pretending to be incensed and making my own. No crowd-sourced wisdom, just my memory. I should admit it's been 20 years since I've laid eyes on some of these places, but I have seen them all. One of the reasons we love islands, I think, is that the way they hold onto their own cultures, even as the surrounding world changes by the day. Also, these are not all swimsuit destinations.
